Which trading platform is best for beginners in the UK?
Verdict
- For UK beginners we recommend Pepperstone's own web platform and app. They work on every Pepperstone UK account, including the commission-free Standard and spread-betting accounts, and need no setup.
- When you want better charts, move to TradingView. At Pepperstone it connects to spread-betting and Razor accounts, but not to Standard.
- Leave MT4, MT5 and cTrader until you're ready to automate. They do much more but take longer to learn.
- Capital.com's own platform is a good beginner alternative if you want guaranteed stops, which Pepperstone doesn't offer.
The platform is the screen you trade on, and the broker is the company holding your money. Beginners often choose by the screen and forget the company. Choose an FCA-regulated broker first, then the simplest platform it offers. At Pepperstone you can switch platforms later without moving your money.
Start on Pepperstone's own platform
Pepperstone's web platform and app run on all three UK account types: spread betting, Standard and Razor. So you can learn with a pounds-per-point spread bet or a commission-free Standard CFD without installing anything. The account sits with Pepperstone Limited (FCA 684312), you can fund it from £10, and a retail balance that goes negative is reset to zero. When the basic screen starts to hold you back, you can add another platform to the same account.

Pepperstone's five platforms, easiest first
| Platform | Why a beginner might use it | What takes getting used to | Pepperstone accounts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pepperstone web and app | Simple order screen, works on every account | Fewer analysis tools | Spread bet, Standard, Razor |
| TradingView | Clean charts you can trade from directly | Lots of features to learn | Spread bet, Razor |
| MT5 | The common standard; many tutorials | Dated layout; built around automation | All three |
| cTrader | Clear order details; cheapest Razor FX commission | Fewer guides for beginners | All three |
| MT4 | Huge library of indicators and expert advisors | Oldest design | Spread bet, Razor |
Beginner-friendly platforms at other FCA firms
If Pepperstone's own platform doesn't suit you, these FCA-authorised firms also build their own platforms. Our order follows our broker ranking, not app ratings.
- Capital.com (FCA 793714): its own web platform and app, plus MT4, MT5 and TradingView. It offers guaranteed stops, and the minimum deposit is £20.
- eToro (FCA 583263): its own web platform and mobile app only. It quotes EUR/USD from 1 pip, and the minimum deposit is $10.
- Plus500 (FCA 509909): its own platform and app, with no MT4, MT5 or TradingView. It offers a guaranteed stop order, paid for through a wider spread.
Five things to practise before you trade real money
- Place an order with a stop-loss attached, then move the stop.
- Find the margin figure for a position before you open it, and check it against Pepperstone's caps: 1:30 on major FX, 1:20 on indices and gold.
- Close part of a position and see how the platform shows the result.
- Find your trade history and the overnight charges on it.
- Make a small withdrawal from the platform's funds screen.

Is MT4 good for beginners?
It works, but it isn't the easiest place to start. At Pepperstone UK, MT4 is only available on spread-betting and Razor accounts, and its strength is automation, which most beginners don't need yet.
Can I switch platforms without opening a new account?
Yes, within the platforms your Pepperstone account supports. A spread-betting account works on all five.
Does the platform change my costs at Pepperstone?
On Razor it does: FX commission is $3.00 per side on cTrader and $3.50 on MT5 and TradingView in a USD account. Standard and spread-bet costs are the same on every platform.
Whatever platform you use, CFDs and spread bets are leveraged and high risk. 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with Pepperstone Limited. Learn the platform with small sizes and only risk money you can afford to lose. Not investment advice.
