Which trading platform do professional traders use in the UK?
Verdict
- There is no published survey of which platform UK professionals use, but our pick for a professional client account is Pepperstone Pro: MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView and API trading, with a free VPS for professional clients, under FCA regulation.
- To be treated as professional you must meet two of three tests: 10 significantly sized trades a quarter over the past year, a portfolio above €500,000, or at least a year working in finance with derivatives knowledge.
- Pro status lifts leverage to up to 1:500 on FX, gold and indices and opens perpetual CFDs, but removes negative balance protection.
- Other professional set-ups include IG's L2 Dealer and ProRealTime, and Saxo's SaxoTrader and OpenAPI.
Professional traders in the UK use whatever fits their strategy: MetaTrader for expert advisors, cTrader or APIs for systematic trading, TradingView for charting, and broker-built terminals for direct order books. We have no data on market share, so this page covers what a professional-grade set-up requires and why Pepperstone is our pick for it.
Our pick: Pepperstone Pro
Pepperstone Limited (FCA 684312) offers professional-client accounts on the same five platforms as its retail accounts — MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView and its own web platform and app — plus API trading. Professional clients qualify for a free VPS, which keeps algorithms running around the clock. Pepperstone says it executes from 50 milliseconds with a 99.32% fill rate and no dealer intervention (its own data for January to March 2026).

Platforms professionals pick, by job
- Systematic strategies: cTrader Automate (C#), MetaTrader expert advisors or a broker API. Pepperstone offers all three; Saxo publishes an OpenAPI.
- Charting and discretionary trading: TradingView, available at Pepperstone, IG, Saxo and others.
- Broker-built professional terminals: IG lists L2 Dealer; Saxo lists SaxoTrader.
- Professional-only firms: Equiti's FCA-regulated UK company directs its products at professional and eligible counterparty clients only.
The trade-off to weigh
Opting up removes retail safeguards. Without negative balance protection, a gap through your stop on 1:500 leverage can leave you owing the broker. Pepperstone does not offer guaranteed stops, so risk control rests on position sizing. If a hard stop matters more than leverage, stay retail, or consider Capital.com (FCA 793714), which offers guaranteed stop-loss orders.
