Which forex brokers allow automated trading with expert advisors?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone allows automated trading with expert advisors on MT4 and MT5 and is our pick for UK algo traders, adding cTrader Automate, API trading and a free VPS for eligible and professional clients.
  • Capital.com and Vantage also state that EAs are allowed; IG, CMC Markets, StoneX Trading and OANDA list MetaTrader, but our data doesn't include their EA policies.
  • In the UK, Pepperstone's MT4 access is limited to the Razor CFD and spread betting accounts; the Standard account runs MT5 and cTrader.

Expert advisors need three things from a broker: a MetaTrader account that permits them, pricing that doesn't eat a small edge, and somewhere stable to run them. Pepperstone publishes all three for UK clients. This page shows which brokers state that EAs are allowed, Pepperstone's other automation routes, and the checks to run before an EA trades real money.

Pepperstone for expert advisors

Pepperstone supports algorithmic trading and EAs on MT4 and MT5, and its Smart Trader Tools add a set of extra apps, EAs and indicators (Pepperstone quotes both "28" and "60+" on different pages). Razor's published EUR/USD average of 0.1 pips plus commission suits high-frequency systems. UK accounts are held with Pepperstone Limited (FCA 684312) and open from £10.

Which brokers support expert advisors on MetaTrader?

Among brokers serving UK clients, these list MetaTrader. "Stated" means the broker's own pages confirm EAs are allowed.

Automation at Pepperstone beyond MetaTrader

  • cTrader Automate: build cBots in C# inside cTrader, where Razor FX commission is $3.00 per side.
  • API trading for systems you host yourself.
  • A free VPS for eligible and professional clients, so an EA keeps running when your computer is off.
  • MetaTrader Signals and cTrader Copy are listed on Pepperstone's international site; its UK copy-trading page wasn't available, so don't count on them in the UK.

Choosing a UK account for your EA

  • Razor CFD: raw spreads, commission from £2.25 per lot per side in GBP; MT4 and MT5 both available.
  • Spread betting: no commission, stakes in pounds per point, MT4 and MT5 available; check your EA sizes in £ per point rather than lots.
  • Standard CFD: no commission, MT5 and cTrader only, no MT4.
  • On a USD account, MT4 charges the full $7 commission when the trade opens; MT5 splits it into $3.50 per side.

Before an EA trades live

  1. Back-test on the broker's own data, then forward-test on a small live stake.
  2. Confirm the leverage limit: UK retail clients are capped at 1:30 on major FX, which may change an EA's position sizing.
  3. Set a maximum position size and daily loss in the EA itself; Pepperstone's UK terms say stop-losses can't be guaranteed.
  4. Run it on a VPS or always-on machine and check logs daily for the first weeks.

Does Pepperstone allow scalping EAs?

Pepperstone allows EAs on MT4 and MT5. Our sources don't include a published scalping policy, so check its terms if your EA scalps.

Can I run an EA on a spread betting account?

At Pepperstone, yes: its UK spread betting account runs on MT4 and MT5. Adjust the EA for stakes in pounds per point.

Do I need a VPS for an expert advisor?

Not strictly, but an EA only trades while its terminal is running. Pepperstone offers a free VPS to eligible and professional clients.

Automated strategies can lose money as fast as manual ones, especially with leverage. Pepperstone says 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money with it on spread bets and CFDs. Past back-test results do not predict future returns; this is not investment advice.
