Which forex broker is best for beginners in the UK?
Verdict
- Pepperstone is the forex broker we recommend to UK beginners. It is FCA-regulated, accepts deposits from £10, its commission-free Standard account averages 1.1 pips on EUR/USD, and retail balances can't go negative.
- On EUR/USD, one standard lot is worth about $10 a pip and 0.1 lot about $1 a pip. Start small.
- Beginners who prefer pounds can spread bet FX at Pepperstone instead. Stakes are in £ per point, there's no commission, and the published minimum on EUR/USD is 0.5.
- Capital.com is the alternative if you want guaranteed stops, which Pepperstone doesn't offer.
Forex is confusing at first mainly because of the units: pips, lots and margin. A good first broker makes those easy to see and keeps your first mistakes small. Here is why Pepperstone fits, with the units worked through in plain numbers.
Pepperstone for your first forex account
Open a Standard account in GBP with Pepperstone Limited (FCA 684312). Your only cost is the spread. Pepperstone publishes averages of 1.1 pips on EUR/USD and 1.2 on GBP/USD, with no commission. You can fund with £10 by debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and practise reading prices on Pepperstone's web platform or app before you move to MT5 or cTrader. The FCA caps retail leverage at 1:30 on major pairs, and Pepperstone resets a negative retail balance to zero.

Pips, lots and margin in plain numbers
A pip on EUR/USD is the fourth decimal place, 0.0001. Its value depends on your trade size, and the margin you need depends on the 1:30 cap:
- A 50-pip move against a 1-lot trade loses $500. On 0.1 lot it loses $50.
- Margin isn't a fee, it's the deposit set aside while the trade is open. But a small margin also means a small move can wipe it out.
| Trade size | Units of EUR | Value of 1 pip | Margin at 1:30 | Spread cost at 1.1 pips |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lot | 100,000 | $10 | about €3,333 | $11 |
| 0.1 lot | 10,000 | $1 | about €333 | $1.10 |
Prefer pounds? Spread bet the same currency pairs
If dollar pip values feel awkward, Pepperstone's spread-betting account lets you stake in pounds per point on 91 FX pairs. At £1 a point, a 20-point move is £20 either way. There is no commission, and the published minimum spreads are 0.5 on EUR/USD and 0.8 on GBP/USD. Pepperstone says spread-betting profits are exempt from UK capital gains tax, though that depends on your circumstances. You can open it next to a Standard account and use both.
When Capital.com is the better first broker
Choose Capital.com if you want a stop that's guaranteed to close your trade at your price. That matters for beginners who hold trades over a weekend, when FX prices can open with a gap. Capital Com (UK) Limited is FCA-regulated (793714), offers guaranteed stop-loss orders and negative balance protection, and accepts deposits from £20. Pepperstone's UK terms say its stops cannot be guaranteed.

Is MT4 or Pepperstone's own app better for a beginner?
Pepperstone's own app is simpler, and it's available on the Standard account. MT4 comes only with Razor CFD accounts and spread betting, so you'd need one of those to use it.
