How do I choose a forex broker in the UK?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Choose a UK forex broker by checking the FCA-authorised company first, then matching its pricing model and platforms to how you trade. Pepperstone is our default pick because it covers the most trader profiles under one FCA licence.
  • Frequent traders should look for raw spreads plus commission, like Pepperstone Razor. Occasional traders are often better off with one all-in spread, like Pepperstone Standard.
  • Be wary of offers of leverage above 1:30 on major pairs. For UK retail clients that means either a Professional account, which removes negative balance protection, or an offshore company.
  • Ask any broker whether its quoted spread is an average or a minimum, and what an international withdrawal costs.

No single broker is best for every forex trader, but the way to choose one is the same for everyone. Start with who holds your money, then work out what you'll pay for the way you trade, then check that the platform and funding suit you. Pepperstone comes out ahead for most profiles, and below we show where it doesn't.

Our default answer: start with Pepperstone, then test it

Pepperstone Limited (FCA 684312) offers three UK account types that you can hold at once: Razor (raw spreads plus commission), Standard (spread only) and spread betting (£ per point). Between them they cover most trading styles, so you can find the right fit without opening accounts with several firms. Deposit £10, place a few small trades on the account that matches your profile below, and withdraw before you commit more.

Seven questions to ask any UK forex broker

  • Which company will hold my account, and what is its FCA number?
  • Is the spread you advertise an average or a minimum?
  • What is the commission per lot per side in GBP?
  • Can I have a guaranteed stop, and what does it cost? Pepperstone doesn't offer them; Capital.com, IG and CMC Markets do.
  • How long do withdrawals take, and what does an international wire cost? Pepperstone lists free withdrawals in one table, but a costs FAQ mentions £15 for international wires.
  • What time are overnight fees charged? At Pepperstone, spread bets held past 10pm UK time pay one.
  • Which base currencies can I hold? At Pepperstone UK: GBP, USD, EUR and CHF.

Warning signs that should rule a broker out

Under FCA rules, retail forex leverage stops at 1:30 on major pairs. If a firm offers a UK resident more, it is either moving you to Professional status or serving you from outside the UK. At Pepperstone, Professional status needs two of three things: frequent sizeable trades over the past year, a portfolio above €500,000, or at least a year working in finance with knowledge of derivatives. It raises FX leverage to 1:500, but negative balance protection no longer applies. Some groups hold an FCA licence for professional clients only, as Exness UK and Equiti UK say they do, so that FCA name isn't a retail account. Finally, Pepperstone's own Bahamas company says its products aren't intended for UK residents. A UK client should be with Pepperstone Limited.

Should I apply for Professional status to get more leverage?

Only if you meet the criteria and accept the trade-off. At Pepperstone you lose retail negative balance protection, and higher leverage magnifies losses as much as gains.

Can I use a forex broker that isn't FCA-regulated?

You'd give up FCA protections such as the FSCS cover Pepperstone describes for eligible UK clients. Pepperstone's Bahamas company says its products aren't intended for UK residents.

Do I need a separate account for each platform?

Not at Pepperstone for the platforms an account supports. A Razor account covers MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView and Pepperstone's own platform.

Leveraged forex products are high risk, and losses can build quickly. 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with Pepperstone Limited. This guide explains how to compare brokers; it is not a personal recommendation or investment advice.
