Which broker is cheapest for trading the Japan 225?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone has the lowest published Japan 225 price in our research: a 7-point minimum spread on its Razor CFD and spread bet (7.4 average), against 9 minimum and 9.4 average on its Standard account, with no commission on index CFDs.
  • None of the other UK-regulated firms in our fact pack publishes a Japan 225 spread, so 'cheapest' here means cheapest published figure, not a tested ranking.
  • At £2 a point, choosing Razor over Standard saves about £4 per round trip at the published averages.
  • Holding costs can outweigh the spread: Pepperstone charges overnight fees after 10 pm UK time, and its JPN225 forward has a 16-point minimum spread.

Cheapest depends on what you can verify, and for the Japan 225 only Pepperstone puts a number on its UK pricing page. Here's what that number costs at a typical stake, why the account type matters more here than on most indices, and how to test rivals before you choose.

Pepperstone's Japan 225 price

Pepperstone's UK costs page lists JPN225 at a minimum of 7 points on the Razor CFD and on spread bets, and 9 points on the Standard CFD. Its index-fees page adds August 2026 averages of 7.4 on Razor and 9.4 on Standard. With no commission on index CFDs, the spread is the whole cost of a same-day trade. The 2-point difference between the accounts is wider here than on any other major index Pepperstone prices, so the account you choose matters. Accounts are held with Pepperstone Limited, FCA-regulated (684312).

Why no one can be crowned cheapest on published data

We looked for a Japan 225 spread from each FCA-regulated firm in our fact pack. Capital.com shows only live spreads. IG, CMC Markets, Spreadex and StoneX publish forex figures but no Japan 225 number we could verify. So Pepperstone is the cheapest firm that publishes its price, and the only one where you know the cost before you sign up. To test the others, compare their live JPN225 quote with Pepperstone's at the same moment, ideally at the time of day you trade.

Costs beyond the spread

  • Overnight financing applies to positions open after 10 pm UK time.
  • The JPN225 forward on Pepperstone's index-fees page has a 16-point minimum spread, more than twice the cash index.
  • Margin: the UK retail cap on major indices is 1:20, so £40,000 of exposure needs £2,000.
  • Gaps: with no guaranteed stops at Pepperstone, a sharp move at the Tokyo open can fill a stop beyond its level.

Who should look elsewhere

If you hold Japan 225 positions through the Asian session while you sleep, a guaranteed stop can be worth more than 2 points of spread. Capital.com (FCA 793714) offers guaranteed stop-loss orders and spread betting, with a £20 minimum deposit and the same 20:1 retail cap on major indices. IG also sells guaranteed stops, charging the premium only if one is triggered.
