Which broker is best for trading indices in the UK?
Verdict
- Pepperstone is the broker we recommend for trading indices in the UK. Published minimum spreads are 1 point on the UK100, 0.4 on the US500 and 0.9 on the GER40, across 26 index markets.
- UK retail leverage on major indices is 1:20 at Pepperstone and Capital.com alike, so a £5,000 position needs £250 of margin.
- If you trade through market opens and want protection from gaps, Capital.com, IG and CMC Markets offer guaranteed stops. Pepperstone does not.
- For charting, Pepperstone's spread-betting and Razor accounts connect to TradingView. The Standard CFD account doesn't.
Index traders mostly need tight prices on a few big indices, a platform that handles fast opens, and a sensible way to manage gaps. Pepperstone handles the first two best among the FCA firms we compare. For the third, a rival has the edge.

Which platform is best for indices trading in the UK?
That depends on how you trade, but one Pepperstone account can run on any of them. The spread-betting account supports all five platforms. On CFDs, MT4 and TradingView need a Razor account.
- TradingView: best if you chart the index and want to place the trade from the same screen.
- MT5: suits rule-based index strategies run as expert advisors. Smart Trader Tools add one-click order panels.
- cTrader: shows detailed order information and lets you write C# bots for open-range or breakout rules.
- Pepperstone's web platform and app: enough for occasional index trades and for keeping an eye on positions.
Index risks a broker can't remove
Indices can open well away from the previous close after overnight news, and an ordinary stop then fills at the first available price. Pepperstone's UK terms say it can't guarantee stops. Capital.com (FCA 793714), IG and CMC Markets sell guaranteed stops, which is the main reason to choose one of them for index trading. Holding positions overnight also adds a financing charge, and Pepperstone's perpetual index CFDs on the NAS100 and US500 are open only to Professional clients in the UK.
