Which CFD brokers offer negative balance protection?
Verdict
- Pepperstone, our top pick, gives retail clients in the UAE negative balance protection: its UAE retail risk disclosure says retail clients are entitled to it.
- Plus500 states customers cannot lose more than their account funds; IG's Dubai entity applies it only on its Limited risk account; Saxo, Spreadex and Forex.com publish it for UK retail clients.
- Our verified data does not confirm negative balance protection terms for Capital.com or XS, so ask them in writing.
- Professional clients usually lose it: at Pepperstone a Pro client may get a one-time protection of up to USD 100,000 instead.
Negative balance protection means a gap or a margin call cannot leave you owing the broker money. It is standard for retail clients in the UK, EU and Australia, but not guaranteed elsewhere, so it is worth confirming before you trade with leverage from the UAE.
Pepperstone protects UAE retail balances
Pepperstone's retail risk disclosure for its UAE business (version 1.0, December 2025) states that retail clients are entitled to negative balance protection. The same protection appears in the terms of Pepperstone Markets Limited, the Bahamas company that issues UAE clients' CFDs, which say retail clients are not liable for negative equity. Combine that with leverage up to 1:200 on major pairs and published average spreads, and it is our first choice for a UAE trader who wants a hard floor under the account.

What the protection does and doesn't cover
Say you hold $1,000 and a weekend gap pushes the account to minus $300 before the stop-out can act. With negative balance protection the broker writes off the $300 and resets the balance to zero. Without it, you owe the $300. What it does not do:
- It does not protect your deposit. You can still lose the full $1,000.
- It does not guarantee your stop-loss price. Pepperstone's terms say stops cannot be guaranteed to fill at your level.
- It does not compensate you if the broker fails; that is the job of a compensation scheme, and none is named for Pepperstone's UAE clients.

Retail versus professional status
Upgrading to a Pro account raises Pepperstone's UAE leverage to 1:500 on currencies and gold, but the protection changes: Pro clients may get a one-time negative balance protection of up to USD 100,000, which the Bahamas terms describe as discretionary. Pepperstone's UAE Pro page copies its Australian eligibility test (a sophisticated-investor quiz with trading experience, or a wholesale-client test with an accountant's certificate), so check how it applies to you before switching.
Questions to put to any broker
- Which company holds my account, and do its client terms state negative balance protection for retail clients?
- Does it apply per account or across all my accounts with you?
- Does it still apply if I become a professional client?
- Is there an investor compensation scheme if you fail, and what is the limit?
Sources
Each broker's own documents.
Does negative balance protection mean I can't lose money?
No. It stops the balance going below zero. You can still lose everything you deposited.
Do Pepperstone Pro clients keep negative balance protection?
Not in the retail form. Pepperstone says Pro clients may get a one-time protection of up to USD 100,000; beyond that, losses can exceed the balance.
Is negative balance protection required by law in the UAE?
Our sources don't cover UAE rules on this, so rely on what the client agreement says. Pepperstone writes it into its UAE retail risk disclosure.
CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. Consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
