Which brokers let you trade indices on MetaTrader?
Verdict
- Pepperstone lets UK clients trade indices on MetaTrader 4 and 5 and is our pick: spread betting and Razor accounts get both, the Standard account gets MT5.
- Its index range is 26 instruments, with published minimums such as 0.4 points on the US500 and 1 on the UK100.
- Capital.com and IG list MT4 and MT5, CMC Markets and StoneX Trading list MT4; confirm your indices are on the MetaTrader version before funding.
If your indicators and expert advisors live in MetaTrader, the broker has to offer indices there, not just on its own web platform. Pepperstone states which UK accounts run MT4 and MT5, and its index list is the same across them. Here is the account-by-account picture, the symbols you'll see, and how other UK brokers compare.
Pepperstone: indices on MT4 and MT5
Pepperstone Limited (FCA 684312) offers 26 indices to UK clients as spread bets or CFDs. On MetaTrader you'll trade them at retail leverage up to 1:20 on major indices, with no commission on spread bets. MT4 and MT5 users also get Pepperstone's Smart Trader Tools add-ons. Accounts open from £10.

Index symbols you'll see in MetaTrader
Pepperstone uses short codes: US500, NAS100, US30, UK100, GER40, JPN225 and others. One quirk: its UK markets page still mentions "GER30", but the instrument trades as GER40. Its index fee page also lists dated forwards such as UK100-F and GER40-F, with wider spreads than the cash versions, so pick the right symbol before you place an order or attach an EA.

MT4 or MT5 for index trading
- MT4: the older platform, with the largest stock of third-party indicators and EAs; at Pepperstone UK it's on spread betting and Razor only.
- MT5: available on every Pepperstone UK account, including Standard.
- If you only chart indices and don't automate, TradingView on the same Pepperstone account may be simpler.

Can I trade the UK100 on MT4 with Pepperstone?
Yes, on the spread betting or Razor account. The Standard account offers MT5 instead.
Are index spreads the same on MT4 and MT5 at Pepperstone?
Pepperstone publishes spreads by account, not by platform, so the account type is what changes the price.
Can I run an EA on indices?
Pepperstone supports EAs on MT4 and MT5. Check the index symbol and contract size in the terminal before letting an EA trade.
Index trading on MetaTrader uses leveraged CFDs or spread bets, which can lose money rapidly. Pepperstone reports that 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money with it on these products. Not investment advice.
