Which platform is best for backtesting trading strategies?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone is our pick for backtesting from the UK because one FCA-regulated account connects the three main testing environments: MetaTrader 4 and 5 for expert advisors, cTrader Automate for C# cBots, and TradingView for chart-based strategy scripts.
  • The best tester depends on your code: MetaTrader if you write or buy EAs, cTrader if you program in C#, TradingView if you test ideas visually on charts.
  • A backtest is only as honest as its cost inputs; load Pepperstone's real charges, such as $3.50 per side on MT5 Razor or $3.00 on cTrader, before trusting a result.
  • In the UK, MT4 and TradingView sit on Pepperstone's Razor CFD and spread betting accounts, not on the Standard CFD account.

Backtesting runs a strategy over past prices to see how it would have behaved. The platform decides the programming language, the price history you test on and how easily a tested strategy moves to a live account. Here is how the main options compare, and why we would run them through Pepperstone.

Why we would backtest through Pepperstone

Most retail backtesting happens in MetaTrader's Strategy Tester, cTrader's automation environment or TradingView's strategy scripts. Among FCA-regulated brokers in our data, only Pepperstone and FxPro offer all three, and Pepperstone adds API trading and a free VPS for eligible and Pro clients, which matters once a tested strategy has to run unattended. You test in whichever tool fits your code, then trade the same strategy live without changing broker.

MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView: which tester suits you?

If you have no code yet, start where your ideas already live: chart-pattern traders on TradingView, systematic traders who want full control on cTrader or MetaTrader.

Load real costs into the test

Strategies that shine in a backtest often fail live on costs. Enter the charges you will actually pay at Pepperstone:

  • Razor on MT5 or TradingView: raw spread plus $3.50 per lot per side, or from £2.25 in a GBP account.
  • Razor on MT4: $7 per lot, charged when the position opens.
  • Razor on cTrader: $3.00 per side on FX, $3.50 on gold.
  • Standard: no commission, but a 1-point mark-up sits inside the FX spread, which is why its published EUR/USD average is 1.1 pips against Razor's 0.1.
  • Overnight fees from 10 pm UK time if the strategy holds positions overnight.

From backtest to live trading: what Pepperstone adds

  • Smart Trader Tools for MetaTrader, including a Trade Simulator and Trade Terminal; Pepperstone's own count of the suite varies between 28 apps on one page and 60+ on another.
  • API trading for strategies written outside the retail platforms.
  • A free VPS for eligible and Pro clients, so an EA or cBot keeps running when your computer is off.
  • A published execution claim to test your assumptions against: fills from 50 milliseconds and a 99.32% fill rate, according to Pepperstone.
  • One limit to model: stop-losses are not guaranteed, so build slippage on stops into the test.

Other UK options for testing

Capital.com, our second choice in the UK, offers MT4, MT5 and TradingView but not cTrader; its draw is guaranteed stop-losses, which make worst-case exits easier to model. IG lists ProRealTime, MT4, MT5, TradingView and APIs, and Saxo offers TradingView, MultiCharts and its OpenAPI. Pepperstone's advantage is the full platform set on one account with published per-lot costs.

Is MT5 better than MT4 for backtesting?

MT5 is the newer platform and the one Pepperstone offers on every UK account, including Standard; MT4 is limited to spread betting and Razor. Starting from scratch, MT5 keeps your options open. If your EAs are written for MT4, stay there.

Does a good backtest mean a strategy will make money?

No. Past prices never repeat exactly, and live trading adds slippage and spreads that change through the day. Use a backtest to rule bad ideas out, then trade small before you scale up.

Can I run a tested strategy on a spread betting account?

Yes. Pepperstone's UK spread betting account runs on MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView and its own platform. Spread bets are priced in pounds per point with no commission, so your cost inputs differ from Razor.

CFDs and spread bets are complex instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage; automated strategies can lose money as fast as manual ones. Past performance, including backtested results, is not a reliable indicator of future results. This page is not investment advice.
