Which trading app is best for beginners in the UK?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone's app is the trading app we recommend to UK beginners. You can fund £10 by Apple Pay or Google Pay, trade a Standard account with no commission, and withdraw back to your card, usually the same day or within 1 working day.
  • Capital.com is the alternative for beginners who want guaranteed stops in their app. Its minimum deposit is £20.
  • If you want to invest rather than trade, a beginner may be better off with an investing app that offers a Stocks ISA, such as Trading 212.
  • At both Pepperstone and Capital.com a UK retail balance can't go below zero, but you can still lose everything you deposit.

On a phone, trading is only a tap or two away. That's convenient for beginners but also risky, so the right first app makes costs and risk clear and keeps your first trades small. Below is why Pepperstone's app fits, a simple first-week plan, and the cases where another app is the better start.

Why we pick Pepperstone's app for beginners

Pepperstone's app works with its commission-free Standard account, where the spread is your only trading cost, and with spread betting in pounds per point. Behind it is Pepperstone Limited, regulated by the FCA (684312). Client money is held separately from Pepperstone's own, and eligible clients have FSCS cover of up to £85,000. Money moves cleanly too: Apple Pay, Google Pay and debit-card deposits are free from £10, and Pepperstone doesn't accept payments from third parties.

A first-week plan on the app

  1. Day 1: open a Standard account in GBP and deposit £10 to £50 by Apple Pay or card.
  2. Day 2: watch one market, such as EUR/USD or the UK100, and note how the spread changes during the day.
  3. Day 3: place the smallest trade the app allows, with a stop-loss attached, and close it yourself.
  4. Day 4: look up the margin used and any overnight charge in your trade history.
  5. Day 5: request a small withdrawal to the card you paid from, and check how long it takes to arrive.

The rules that protect beginners, and their limits

  • Leverage caps: 1:30 on major FX, 1:20 on major indices and gold, 1:5 on shares. These are maximums, and smaller sizes are always allowed.
  • Negative balance protection: Pepperstone says it returns a negative retail balance to zero. That stops you owing money, but it doesn't stop you losing your deposit.
  • No retail crypto: UK apps can't sell crypto CFDs to retail clients under the FCA ban.
  • Stops can slip: on Pepperstone, a stop-loss closes at the next available price if the market gaps.

What is the least I can start with on the Pepperstone app?

£10 by Apple Pay, Google Pay or debit card. Bank transfers have no minimum.

Does Trading 212's CFD account charge commission?

Its help centre says CFDs are commission-free with dynamic spreads, plus a 0.5% FX fee where currency conversion applies.

Can I use the Pepperstone app for spread betting as a beginner?

Yes. The spread-betting account runs in Pepperstone's own app, with stakes in pounds per point and no commission.

Leveraged trading from an app is high risk, and beginners often lose money. 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with Pepperstone Limited. Start small and only use money you can afford to lose. This is not investment advice.
