Can I use a sophisticated investor certificate to open a pro trading account?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Yes. Pepperstone, our recommended broker for Australian pro accounts, accepts a qualified accountant's certificate under section 761G(7) of the Corporations Act as one route to wholesale (pro) status.
  • The certificate has to confirm net assets of A$2.5 million, or gross income of A$250,000 a year for each of the last two years.
  • Pepperstone uses the words 'sophisticated investor' for a separate route, a trading-experience test plus a knowledge quiz, so you can qualify without a certificate if your trading record meets that test.
  • Whichever route you use, the result is the same: leverage up to 1:500 on major FX and gold, and fewer retail protections.

What most Australians call a 'sophisticated investor certificate' is the accountant's certificate proving you pass the wealth test. CFD providers that run pro accounts can rely on it to classify you as a wholesale client. Below: how Pepperstone uses it, where its wording differs from the everyday label, and what to prepare.

Pepperstone accepts the accountant's certificate

Pepperstone Group Limited (AFSL 414530) lists a wealth test among the ways to become a pro client: net assets of A$2.5 million, or gross income of A$250,000 a year over two years, evidenced by a certificate from a qualified accountant as section 761G(7) provides. If you already hold a certificate prepared for some other wholesale offer, ask Pepperstone whether it will take that document or needs a fresh one, and how recent it must be. It is our pick here because it publishes every route and the protections you give up in one place.

Two different things called 'sophisticated'

In everyday use, the certificate is a wealth document. On Pepperstone's Australian pro page, 'sophisticated investor' labels the experience route instead. Confusing the two can send you after the wrong paperwork.

What the accountant has to confirm

The certificate is your accountant's statement, not yours, so brief them before the appointment:

  • Net assets of at least A$2.5 million, or
  • Gross income of at least A$250,000 in each of the last two years.
  • That they sign as a qualified accountant for Corporations Act purposes.
  • Your full legal name exactly as it appears on your trading application, so the broker can match the two.

What the certificate unlocks, and what it costs you

Once Pepperstone accepts the reclassification, the pro column of its leverage table applies: up to 1:500 on major and minor FX and gold, 1:400 on major indices, 1:20 on shares and ETFs, and 1:10 on BTC/USD and ETH/USD, against 1:30, 1:20, 1:5 and 1:2 for retail. Negative-balance protection shrinks to a one-time cover of up to USD 100,000. A certificate shows you can absorb losses; it says nothing about whether your strategy needs more leverage.

No certificate? Your other options

If your income or assets fall short, the trading-record or work-history route may still get you there. If neither fits, a retail Razor account keeps full negative-balance protection, with a published EUR/USD average of 0.1 pips and an MT5 commission of A$3.50 per side in an AUD account, from a $10 minimum deposit. Capital.com (AFSL 513393) is our second choice for Australian retail accounts; its wholesale criteria were not in the material we verified, so check them with the firm.

How long is a sophisticated investor certificate valid for a pro account?

Pepperstone's pro page, as we checked it, doesn't state a validity period. Ask how recent the certificate must be before you pay an accountant to prepare it.

Do I still sit the knowledge quiz if I use a certificate?

Pepperstone pairs the quiz with its sophisticated-investor (experience) route; the wealth route rests on the accountant's certificate. Confirm what is required when you apply.

Can a certificate prepared for another investment be reused?

Possibly. Ask Pepperstone whether it accepts an existing certificate or wants one prepared for it.

Will I get 1:500 leverage as soon as I upload it?

Only after Pepperstone approves the reclassification. Then pro maximums apply, including up to 1:500 on major FX and gold.

CFDs are complex, leveraged products with a high risk of losing money quickly. Wholesale clients receive fewer protections than retail clients. This is general information, not investment or tax advice; speak to your accountant and read the broker's PDS before applying.
