Which AI trading platforms are safe to use in Australia?
Verdict
- Safety comes from the company holding your money, not from the AI; Pepperstone, our pick, is ASIC-licensed (AFSL 414530), keeps retail money in segregated accounts and resets a negative retail balance to zero.
- A safe setup keeps the AI on your side of the fence: your own strategy running through MT5, cTrader Automate or an API on your own account, with no third party able to withdraw.
- Pepperstone names no compensation scheme in Australia and says that on liquidation there is no guarantee all segregated funds would be returned.
- Capital.com (AFSL 513393) is our second choice, with guaranteed stops and negative balance protection for retail clients.
No AI software is safe or unsafe on its own; the question is what it can touch. If a tool can only send orders to an account you own at an ASIC-licensed broker, the worst case is a bad trade. If it controls your money, the worst case is losing all of it. Here is how to keep it the first way.
Why we start with Pepperstone
Your money sits with Pepperstone Group Limited, licensed by ASIC under AFSL 414530 and based in Melbourne. Retail funds are segregated at top-tier banks, and retail clients have negative balance protection. Automation stays under your control: you can run expert advisors on MT4 and MT5, cBots on cTrader Automate, or connect through API trading, and withdrawals go back only to your own funding source. Pepperstone is also clear about the limit: if the company were liquidated, segregated money is dealt with under the Corporations Act and there is no guarantee every dollar would come back.

Five tests for any AI trading product
- Who holds the money? It should be a broker whose AFSL number you can find in its PDS and on ASIC's register.
- Can the tool withdraw? It should not. Pepperstone returns withdrawals to the original funding source.
- Can you see every trade? Orders should appear in your own platform, in real time.
- Can you switch it off? You should be able to stop the EA, cBot or API program yourself at any moment.
- Does it promise returns? Any guarantee on leveraged trading is false.
Risks the licence does not remove
- Market risk: ASIC's 1:30 retail cap on major FX limits leverage, not losses.
- Slippage: Pepperstone does not offer guaranteed stops, so an automated stop can fill beyond its level.
- Software faults: a bug can open trades you did not intend; start at minimum size.

Is my money protected by a compensation scheme at Pepperstone Australia?
No scheme is named. Retail money is segregated, and Pepperstone says there is no guarantee all funds would be returned on liquidation.
Is an AI trading bot sold online safe to use?
Only if it runs on your own account at a licensed broker, cannot withdraw money and can be switched off by you. Avoid any that guarantee returns.
Which is safer for automation, MT5 or cTrader?
Neither platform is safer in itself; safety depends on the broker holding the account and on testing the code. Pepperstone offers both.
CFD trading, automated or not, is leveraged and carries a high risk of losing money rapidly. A licence does not protect you from trading losses. Read the PDS and TMD. This page is general information, not investment advice.
