Can I connect an AI trading bot to an ASIC regulated broker?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Yes: Pepperstone, an ASIC-regulated broker (AFSL 414530) and our pick, lets a bot trade through MT4 and MT5 expert advisors, C# cBots on cTrader Automate, or API trading.
  • The bot has to come in a form the platform accepts: MQL code for MetaTrader, C# for cTrader, or a program talking to an API; a chatbot on its own cannot place orders.
  • In Australia, Pepperstone's MT4 is Razor-only, while MT5 and cTrader come with both accounts.
  • ASIC's retail leverage caps and negative balance protection apply to a bot's positions exactly as to yours.

Yes, and it is routine. Licensed brokers do not care whether a person or a program clicks the button, as long as the order arrives through a supported platform. What matters is the connection method, the account type and who controls the credentials.

The three ways to connect at Pepperstone

Pepperstone lists automation through MetaTrader expert advisors, cTrader Automate and API trading, and says EAs are allowed. Your model, whether it is a machine-learning script or a rule set written with an AI assistant, plugs into one of these. On Razor, EUR/USD averages 0.1 pips; a bot on cTrader pays USD 3.00 commission per side, and one on MT5 pays USD 3.50 (AUD 3.50 on an AUD account).

Step by step

  1. Confirm your bot's format and choose the matching route above.
  2. Open the account type that supports it; pick Razor if you need MT4.
  3. Install the bot on the platform and run it on the smallest size first.
  4. Keep it running on a machine that stays on; Pepperstone offers a free VPS to eligible and Pro clients.
  5. Compare live fills and costs against the bot's back-test for the first weeks.

Rules that still apply to the bot

  • Leverage: retail caps of 1:30 on major FX and 1:20 on gold and major indices limit how large a bot can trade.
  • Losses: retail negative balance protection resets a negative Pepperstone account to zero, but a bot can still lose the whole balance.
  • Stops: Pepperstone does not offer guaranteed stops, so a bot's stop can slip in fast markets.
  • Responsibility: the account is yours, and so is every trade the bot places.

If someone else supplies the bot

Never give a third party your client-area login or permission to withdraw. A legitimate vendor gives you software you install, or code you can read. Capital.com, our second choice, also permits expert advisors on MT4 and MT5 under its ASIC licence (AFSL 513393), but does not offer cTrader.

Terms as each broker publishes them on its own site.

Is it legal to use a trading bot with an ASIC broker?

Automated trading is permitted by brokers such as Pepperstone and Capital.com; you remain responsible for the bot's trades and must follow the account terms.

Can I connect ChatGPT-style AI directly to my broker?

Not on its own. The AI has to produce code or signals that run through an EA, a cBot or an API program that places the orders.

Does Pepperstone charge more for automated trades?

No separate fee appears in its published costs; bots pay the same spreads and commission as manual trades on that platform.

Automated CFD trading is leveraged and can lose money rapidly, including through software faults or connection problems. Test thoroughly and read the PDS and TMD. Not investment advice; platform terms are as Pepperstone publishes them and may change.
