What are the eligibility criteria for a pro trading account in Australia?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone, our pick for Australian traders who want pro terms, accepts you as a wholesale client if you pass either its sophisticated-investor test plus a knowledge quiz, or a wealth test certified by a qualified accountant.
  • Sophisticated investor: 20 or more leveraged FX/CFD trades a quarter over four quarters in the last two years, each with at least A$50,000 notional, or a year or more in a professional trading role.
  • Wealth test (s761G(7) of the Corporations Act): net assets of A$2.5 million, or gross income of A$250,000 a year for each of the last two years.
  • The pay-off is leverage of up to 1:500 on major FX; the cost is losing retail protections, including full negative-balance protection.

In Australia a 'pro' account means being treated as a wholesale client, which lets the broker step outside ASIC's retail leverage caps. You qualify through experience or through wealth. Pepperstone publishes both routes in detail, so we use its criteria as the worked example.

Pepperstone's two routes to a pro account

Pepperstone Group Limited (AFSL 414530) lists the tests on its Australian pro page. You need only one route, not both. The experience route suits active traders with a record; the wealth route suits people with assets or income but little trading history. Pepperstone remains our recommended broker for this because it states the criteria in full and keeps the same Razor and Standard accounts, platforms and $10 minimum deposit once you are reclassified.

How do I qualify as a wholesale client for a pro trading account in Australia?

Pick the test you can document, then apply through the broker's pro application. With Pepperstone the trading-experience route needs a clear record: four quarters, at least 20 qualifying trades in each, and every one of those trades at A$50,000 or more in notional value. Small positions don't count towards the 20. If you rely on the wealth test, ask your accountant for the certificate first; it is the document the Corporations Act relies on, and without it the application stalls.

  1. Choose a route: trading record, professional role, or wealth.
  2. Gather proof: broker statements, an employment reference, or an accountant's certificate.
  3. Complete the knowledge quiz if you apply as a sophisticated investor.
  4. Read the pro terms on leverage and negative balance before you accept the reclassification.

What changes once you are classed as pro

The leverage table on Pepperstone's Australian costs page shows the difference. Retail clients are capped at 1:30 on major FX, 1:20 on major indices and gold, and 1:2 on crypto. Pro clients can use up to 1:500 on major and minor FX and gold, 1:400 on major indices and 1:10 on BTC/USD and ETH/USD. The protection side shrinks too:

  • Retail clients get negative-balance protection; Pepperstone restores a negative account to zero.
  • Pro clients get a one-time negative-balance protection of up to USD 100,000, and nothing beyond it.
  • No compensation scheme is named for Australian clients in either category; segregated money is handled under the Corporations Act, and Pepperstone notes there is no guarantee all funds are returned on liquidation.

Is it worth applying?

Only if margin is actually limiting a strategy you already run profitably at retail size. Higher leverage raises the size of losses as quickly as gains, and the reduced protection means a fast market can leave you owing money. Capital.com, our second choice in Australia, also holds an ASIC licence (AFSL 513393); its pro terms aren't in our data, so compare them directly with the provider.

Can I get a pro account with A$1 million in assets?

Not through the wealth test, which requires A$2.5 million in net assets or A$250,000 gross income a year for two years. You could still qualify on trading experience.

Do small trades count toward the 20 trades a quarter?

Under Pepperstone's criteria each qualifying trade must be at least A$50,000 in notional value.

Can I go back to retail status?

Pepperstone's pages in our data don't describe the process; ask support before you apply, since retail status restores the ASIC leverage limits and full negative-balance protection.

Trading CFDs with leverage can lose you money quickly, including all of the funds you deposit. Nothing here is personal advice; broker terms change, so confirm them on the broker's own site and in its Product Disclosure Statement.
