Pepperstone vs XM: which is better?
Verdict
- Pepperstone is the better choice for a Hong Kong trader: it publishes average spreads, adds cTrader and TradingView to MetaTrader, and our data confirms it accepts Hong Kong residents, which it doesn't for XM.
- XM's lowest-cost account advertises 'spreads as low as zero' but publishes no EUR/USD figure; Pepperstone Razor publishes a 0.1-pip average plus $3.50 commission per side.
- XM's minimum deposit is $5, against Pepperstone's $10.
- XM is regulated by CySEC, Belize's FSC and the DFSA in Dubai; Pepperstone serves Hong Kong from the Bahamas (SCB SIA-F217). Neither shows an SFC licence.
On most points a Hong Kong trader cares about, Pepperstone comes out ahead. XM's real advantages are a $5 minimum and a published swap-free option. Here is where each one wins.
Where Pepperstone wins
Costs you can check: EUR/USD averages 0.1 pips on Razor with $3.50 per side, or 1.1 pips with no commission on Standard; gold averages 0.12 and 0.19. Platform choice: MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView and its own app, against XM's MT4, MT5 and XM app. Local fit: an HKD base currency, HK50 at a 5-point average spread, and 0.2% per side on HK share CFDs. Access: our broker data lists Hong Kong among the countries Pepperstone accepts, through Pepperstone Markets Limited in the Bahamas. That entity holds no SFC licence, so you rely on the Bahamas regulator rather than Hong Kong's.

Where XM has the edge
- Smaller first deposit: $5 against $10.
- Swap-free: XM says it offers a swap-free option, though the terms aren't published on its account page. Pepperstone's swap-free account excludes Hong Kong residents.

Why 'as low as zero' isn't a price
A 'from' or 'as low as' spread is the tightest quote a broker has seen, often for a moment in the most liquid hour. It tells you nothing about what you'll usually pay, and on zero-spread accounts the cost moves into commission. Pepperstone's 0.1 is an average, which is why we can turn it into a cost: about $8 per standard lot round trip on MT5 and $7 on cTrader. Ask XM for its average EUR/USD spread and commission on the Zero account, and you can make the same calculation.
