Pepperstone vs Plus500, which should I choose?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Choose Pepperstone if you want published spreads, a choice of MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView, and an account in Hong Kong dollars; Plus500 suits someone who wants a single in-house app and a guaranteed stop.
  • Neither shows an SFC licence. Pepperstone serves Hong Kong through Pepperstone Markets Limited, licensed by the Securities Commission of The Bahamas (SIA-F217), and Plus500's footer lists no Hong Kong company.
  • Pepperstone publishes a 0.1-pip average EUR/USD spread on Razor plus $3.50 commission per side, or 1.1 pips with no commission on Standard; Plus500 publishes no EUR/USD average and is paid through the spread.
  • Plus500 lists an inactivity fee of up to USD 10 a month after three months without a login; Pepperstone charges none.

For most Hong Kong traders the answer is Pepperstone, because you can see what a trade costs before you place it and you are not tied to one platform. Plus500 keeps things simpler and offers guaranteed stops, which Pepperstone does not. Below are the differences that actually change your results.

The short answer: Pepperstone, unless guaranteed stops matter most

Pepperstone prices its two accounts in the open. Razor carries a published average EUR/USD spread of 0.1 pips plus $3.50 commission per side on MT5 ($3.00 on cTrader), while Standard averages 1.1 pips with the cost folded into the spread. You can fund from $10, hold the account in HKD and trade on MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView (Razor only) or Pepperstone's own app. Plus500 runs only its proprietary web platform and app and does not publish an average EUR/USD spread; its fees page uses a spread figure purely as a worked example. Where Plus500 is ahead is loss control: its Guaranteed Stop Order caps the exit price, paid for through a wider spread and not available on every instrument. Pepperstone publishes no guaranteed stop, so its stop-losses can fill at a worse level when the market gaps.

Which one fits the way you trade

  • You trade from charts or run EAs and cBots: Pepperstone. Plus500 publishes no MetaTrader, cTrader or TradingView connection.
  • You want a hard ceiling on the loss per trade, overnight gaps included: Plus500's guaranteed stop does that. At Pepperstone the substitute is a smaller position.
  • You may leave the account idle for months: Plus500's monthly inactivity charge adds up, whereas Pepperstone only archives unused accounts holding under 10 currency units.
  • You trade Hong Kong stocks or the Hang Seng: Pepperstone lists HK share CFDs at 0.2% commission per side and HK50 at a 5-point average spread with no commission.

What a Hong Kong resident gets on regulation

Both brands hold strong licences elsewhere. Pepperstone is overseen by ASIC, the FCA, CySEC, BaFin and the DFSA among others; Plus500 by the FCA, CySEC, ASIC and Singapore's MAS among others. Neither shows a Hong Kong licence, and our search of the SFC public register returned nothing under Pepperstone's name. A Pepperstone account opened from Hong Kong sits with the Bahamas company, which allows retail leverage of up to 1:200 on major FX, gold and major indices, states that 80% of retail CFD accounts lose money and names no compensation scheme. Retail clients there are not liable for a negative balance, and Plus500 likewise says customers cannot lose more than the funds in their account. Plus500 does not appear among the brokers our data confirms for Hong Kong, so ask it in writing which company would hold your money before you deposit.

Which is cheaper, Pepperstone or Plus500?

We can't settle it on EUR/USD because Plus500 publishes no average spread. Pepperstone's published round-trip cost for one standard lot on Razor is about $8 on MT5: 0.1 pip ($1) plus $7 commission.

Does Pepperstone offer guaranteed stop-loss orders?

Not as far as it publishes. A Pepperstone stop-loss triggers a market order, which can fill beyond your level in a fast or gapping market.

Can I use MetaTrader with Plus500?

Plus500's site shows only its own web platform and mobile app, with no MT4, MT5 or TradingView link.

Is either broker licensed by the SFC?

No SFC licence is shown for either. Pepperstone's Hong Kong clients deal with its Bahamas company.

CFDs are complex instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly because of leverage. Only trade if you understand how they work and can afford to lose the money. This comparison is not investment advice.
