Pepperstone vs Vantage: which is better for trading gold?
Verdict
- For trading gold from Hong Kong we pick Pepperstone: it publishes average XAU/USD spreads of 0.12 on Razor and 0.19 on Standard, while Vantage's gold spreads are not in our data.
- Pepperstone's Bahamas entity, which serves Hong Kong, allows retail gold leverage of up to 1:200, and its retail margin table also lists a GOLD-PERP perpetual CFD.
- Our data does not confirm Vantage accepts Hong Kong residents; its listed licences are ASIC, FCA, CIMA (Cayman), FSC Mauritius, FSCA and VFSC (Vanuatu).
- Neither broker shows an SFC licence.
Gold costs come down to spread, commission and how long you hold. Pepperstone publishes the first two for XAU/USD; Vantage, in the data we hold, publishes its forex pricing but no gold average. That and Hong Kong access make Pepperstone the pick, and the arithmetic below shows which Pepperstone account suits gold.
Pepperstone for gold: the published terms
Pepperstone's average gold spread is 0.12 on Razor and 0.19 on Standard; the UK site quotes a Razor minimum of 0.08. Razor adds commission, $3.50 per side on MT5 and also on cTrader for XAU/USD, which makes $7 per lot round trip. Standard has none. You can trade gold on MT4, MT5, cTrader, the Pepperstone app and, with Razor, TradingView. As a retail client of the Bahamas company you can use up to 1:200 on gold, so the margin on a position can be as little as 0.5% of its value; that magnifies losses as much as gains. For traders who hold for weeks, the retail margin table also includes GOLD-PERP, a perpetual CFD with no expiry whose funding rate is set weekly in advance and charged daily.

Razor or Standard for gold?
On 100 ounces of gold, the published averages give a spread cost of $12 on Razor and $19 on Standard. If a Pepperstone gold lot is 100 ounces (confirm it in the platform's contract specifications), Razor's $7 commission brings it to $19 as well, so the two accounts come out level for gold at average spreads. Pick by your other trading: if you also trade forex actively, Razor saves money there; if gold and indices are most of what you trade, Standard is simpler.

Habits that cut the cost of trading gold
- Compare live gold spreads at the hour you trade; averages are averages, and spreads can widen around major US data releases.
- Count the swap on positions held overnight. For multi-week holds, compare it with the funding on a perpetual.
- Keep leverage well below the 1:200 ceiling; gold can move sharply within a single session.
- Use the same account currency you fund in. Pepperstone offers HKD; Vantage's HKD option isn't in our data.
