Is it better to trade gold with CFDs or buy physical gold in the UAE?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • For short-term trading, gold CFDs with a broker such as Pepperstone, our pick, are usually better; for holding gold for years, physical gold usually is.
  • A CFD lets you go long or short with leverage (up to 1:200 for Pepperstone's UAE retail clients) and costs a spread, 0.12 on average on Razor plus commission, but you never own metal.
  • Physical gold carries no leverage, no swap and no broker counterparty, but you pay the dealer's premium over spot and have to store and insure it.
  • Holding a CFD for months adds daily swap; Pepperstone offers no swap-free account to UAE residents, while Capital.com and XS do.

The two are different tools rather than better or worse versions of the same thing. A CFD is a leveraged bet on the gold price that is cheap to open and close; a bar or coin is an asset you own outright. Which is better depends on how long you plan to hold and whether you want leverage at all.

When CFDs make more sense, and why we use Pepperstone

Gold CFDs suit you if you trade moves that last minutes to weeks, want to profit from falls as well as rises, or prefer not to tie up the full value of the metal. Pepperstone publishes an average XAU/USD spread of 0.12 on its Razor account (plus $3.50 commission per side) and 0.19 on Standard, accepts AED deposits through Mashreq Bank and Barclays, and gives UAE retail clients negative balance protection, so a CFD position should not leave you owing more than your balance. The counterparty for UAE retail clients is Pepperstone Markets Limited, regulated by the Securities Commission of The Bahamas (SIA-F217).

The holding-cost problem with long CFD positions

A CFD held for weeks or months pays swap every night, and over a long period that can outweigh a small entry spread. That matters for UAE residents in particular: Pepperstone does not offer its swap-free account to people living in the UAE. If you want to hold gold exposure for a long time through a broker, Capital.com offers a swap-free account to UAE residents (its admin fees are not published, so ask), and XS applies swap-free terms automatically and says it adds no fees instead. For most multi-year holders, though, owning the metal avoids the issue entirely.

A simple way to decide

  • Holding period under a few weeks, and you want to trade both directions: a CFD account.
  • Holding period of years, and you want an asset outside the financial system: physical gold.
  • You want both: keep a core holding in metal and trade around it with a small CFD account.
  • Whichever you choose, check the full cost: CFD swap at your broker, or the dealer's buy and sell premiums for metal.

Can I convert a gold CFD into physical gold?

No. A CFD is settled in cash; there is no delivery of metal.

Is physical gold risk-free?

No. Its price can fall, you pay a premium when buying and usually receive less when selling, and stored metal can be lost or stolen. It does avoid leverage and broker risk.

Are gold CFDs riskier than physical gold?

Usually, because of leverage. At 1:200 a 0.5% move against you equals your full margin. Pepperstone's negative balance protection limits losses to your account balance for retail clients, but that balance can still go to zero.

Risk warning: CFDs are leveraged products and you can lose money fast. Make sure you understand how they work and whether you can afford to take that risk. This article reports broker-published terms and is not personal investment advice.
