Can I trade copper as a CFD in Australia?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone, our pick, offers metals other than gold in a separate 1:10 leverage tier for Australian retail clients, within its 40 commodity CFDs, but our verified data doesn't name a copper contract, so check the symbol list before you fund.
  • At 1:10, A$10,000 of copper exposure needs about A$1,000 of margin, and at Pepperstone in Australia even professional clients stay at 1:10 on these metals.
  • If copper isn't listed, ASX mining shares traded as CFDs are an indirect way to take a view, with company-specific risk on top.
  • Capital.com (AFSL 513393), our second choice, offers guaranteed stops; Pepperstone does not.

Copper gets more attention in Australia than almost anywhere, because so much of the local market is tied to mining. As a CFD it is less widely listed than gold or oil, so the first job is confirming your broker actually quotes it.

Copper at Pepperstone: what we can and can't confirm

Pepperstone Group Limited (ASIC, AFSL 414530) lists 40 commodity CFDs and gives metals other than gold their own line in its leverage table: 1:10 for retail and also 1:10 for professional clients. That tells you base and minor metals are part of the range; it doesn't tell us whether copper is one of them, and we won't claim it is. Open a demo or a $10 account, search the market watch for copper, and check the specification before you plan a trade.

Margin on a copper position

Because the professional limit matches the retail one, qualifying as a wholesale client brings no extra leverage on copper here, only reduced negative balance protection.

Why copper draws Australian traders

Copper is widely read as a gauge of industrial demand, and Chinese data often moves it. For Australians it sits close to home: miners make up a large slice of the ASX, so a copper view often overlaps with positions you may already hold in shares or super. Check that overlap before adding a copper CFD, or you may be doubling the same bet.

Indirect routes if copper isn't listed

  • ASX mining shares as CFDs: Pepperstone offers 200 ASX shares at 0.07% commission per side, with 1:5 retail leverage. A miner's price reflects its costs, debt and management as well as the metal.
  • ETF CFDs: Pepperstone lists 95 (its markets page says 80+); our data doesn't confirm a copper-focused ETF among them, so search the platform.
  • Another ASIC-licensed provider: Capital.com, IG (AFSL 515106) or CMC Markets (AFSL 238054) may list copper; we hold no copper data for them.

Checklist for any copper CFD

  1. Confirm the price unit (per pound or per tonne) and how much one lot represents.
  2. Check whether the CFD follows a dated futures contract and how it rolls.
  3. Note trading hours and the spread at the time you'd trade.
  4. Check overnight financing for longs and shorts.
  5. Decide whether you need a guaranteed stop; if so, Capital.com offers one and Pepperstone doesn't.
