Which brokers offer the tightest spreads on gold during volatility?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • No broker publishes its gold spread for volatile periods, so no one can honestly name the tightest; we recommend Pepperstone for fast gold markets because it publishes minimum and average XAU/USD spreads and its execution statistics.
  • Published averages, which mostly reflect normal conditions: IC Markets Raw 0.09, Pepperstone Razor 0.12, FP Markets Raw 0.12, Pepperstone Standard 0.19, FP Markets Standard 0.25.
  • Pepperstone says orders fill from 50 milliseconds with a 99.32% fill rate and no dealer intervention, based on trades from January to March 2026.
  • Pepperstone does not offer guaranteed stops; Capital.com does, and in a gap that can matter more than the spread.

A spread table tells you what gold usually costs. Volatility is when it doesn't: around US jobs data, Federal Reserve decisions or geopolitical shocks, quotes widen at every broker as liquidity thins. Here is what the published figures can and can't tell you, and how to measure a broker's news-time spread yourself.

Our pick for volatile gold markets: Pepperstone

We rate brokers for volatile conditions on what they disclose and how they execute, since nobody discloses a worst-case spread. Pepperstone publishes a 0.12 average on Razor and a 0.08 minimum on its UK fee page, plus the fill statistics above, and its Australian company (AFSL 414530) gives retail clients negative balance protection, so a gap can't leave you owing money. It lets you test cheaply too: fund from $10 and watch XAU/USD through a scheduled release before trading real size.

What brokers publish, and what it leaves out

An average is weighted by the many calm hours, and a 'from' figure is the best moment of the day. Neither tells you the spread in the first seconds after a US data release, and IC Markets' figure comes from its global pricing page, which may differ from its Australian entity's.

Why every gold spread widens at the same moments

Before a big release, liquidity providers pull or widen their quotes, and brokers pass that on. For eastern Australia the risky windows are predictable: US payrolls and inflation data land late in the evening or just after midnight, and the Monday reopen can gap on weekend news. The broker that is tightest at 2 pm Sydney time may not be tightest at 10:30 pm, so test during the window you actually trade.

How to measure news-time spreads yourself

  1. Open demo or small live accounts at the two brokers you are choosing between.
  2. Add XAU/USD to the market watch on the same platform type at both.
  3. Record the spread one minute before a scheduled US release, at release time, and two minutes after.
  4. Repeat over three or four releases; one event can mislead.
  5. Compare how quickly each spread returns to normal as well as how wide it gets.

Protecting a gold position when spreads blow out

  • Avoid market orders in the seconds after a release; a limit order caps your entry price.
  • Size down rather than tightening the stop: at Pepperstone's 1:20 retail limit you post 5% margin, and a $20 move on 100 ounces is $2,000.
  • If you need a guaranteed exit, Capital.com (AFSL 513393) offers guaranteed stop-losses; Pepperstone's Australian PDS does not.
  • Check whether your platform's stop triggers on the bid or the ask, as a widened spread can trigger a stop that price alone wouldn't.

Spreads and execution claims as each broker publishes them.

Is Razor better than Standard when gold is volatile?

Razor's raw spread widens with the market, but its commission stays fixed, so its total cost usually stays below Standard's. Test both around a release if you trade news often.

Does Pepperstone publish a maximum gold spread?

No. It publishes minimum and average spreads; no broker in our data publishes a maximum.

Can a gold stop-loss fill worse than its level?

Yes. Pepperstone's stops are not guaranteed, so in a gap the order fills at the next available price.

Trading gold CFDs is high risk: they are complex, leveraged instruments and losses can build quickly, especially around news. Spreads shown are published figures, not guarantees. Read each broker's PDS and TMD; this is not investment advice.
