Are broker trading apps as good as desktop platforms now?
Verdict
- For placing, managing and closing trades, a good broker app is now as good as desktop: Pepperstone's app trades the same ASIC-licensed account, at the same USD 3.50-per-side Razor commission as MT5 and TradingView.
- Desktop still wins for automation: Pepperstone's expert advisors run on MT4 and MT5, cBots on cTrader Automate, and its Smart Trader Tools are MT4/MT5 add-ons.
- Pepperstone's perpetual CFDs are listed for its own app, MT5, cTrader and TradingView, so on that product the app is ahead of MT4.
- Most active traders end up using both: desktop to plan and automate, the app to watch and adjust.
Mostly, yes. On a broker such as Pepperstone the app is not a cut-down product: it trades the same account types at the same spreads and charges the same commission as MT5. The gaps that remain are in automation, multi-screen analysis and add-on tools, and they matter only if you trade that way.
Where the Pepperstone app matches desktop
Pepperstone prices its own web platform and app the same as its third-party platforms: on Razor, USD 3.50 per side on FX, the same as MT5 and TradingView (cTrader is cheaper at USD 3.00). Spreads come from the same account, so a Razor trade averages 0.1 pips on EUR/USD whether you open it on a phone or a desktop. Funding is the same too: PayID, card, Apple Pay and Google Pay deposits are instant from $10. The app also lists Pepperstone's perpetual CFDs, a product MT4 does not carry.

Where desktop is still ahead
- Automated trading: Pepperstone supports expert advisors on MT4 and MT5, C# cBots through cTrader Automate, and API trading. These run on a desktop or a server, not inside a phone app.
- A free VPS, offered to eligible and Pro clients, keeps those bots running when your computer is off.
- Smart Trader Tools such as Trade Terminal, Correlation Matrix and Mini Terminal are MT4/MT5 add-ons.
- Screen space: comparing several charts or running a trade terminal is easier on a large display.

Is it safe to trade only from a phone?
The risk sits in the product, not the device. Leverage under ASIC rules is capped at 1:30 on major FX for retail clients, and Pepperstone restores a negative retail balance to zero. Where a phone adds risk is speed and fat fingers: a mistyped lot size is easier on a small screen. Set a default trade size, attach a stop-loss to every order, and remember that Pepperstone does not offer guaranteed stops, so a stop can fill at a worse price in a fast market.

Can I start a trade on desktop and close it on my phone?
Yes, if you use the same platform on both: an MT5 position opened on your computer shows in the MT5 app logged into that account, and the same goes for cTrader or Pepperstone's own web platform and app.
Do apps have worse prices than desktop platforms?
Not at Pepperstone: spreads come from the account type, and the app's Razor commission equals MT5's.
Can I run trading bots on my phone?
Not on Pepperstone's supported routes. Expert advisors and cBots run on MT4, MT5 or cTrader Automate on a computer or VPS; the phone is for monitoring.
CFDs and margin FX are complex and leveraged, with a high risk of rapid losses on any device. Read the PDS and TMD and consider whether you can afford the risk. This page is not investment advice; platform features change, so confirm them with the broker.
