Can I trade US indices from Australia?
Verdict
- Yes. Australian residents can trade the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and Dow Jones as CFDs through ASIC-licensed brokers; Pepperstone, our pick, lists them as US500, NAS100 and US30.
- Pepperstone's published Razor averages are 0.4 points on US500, 1 on NAS100 and 2 on US30, with no commission on index CFDs.
- The main US session falls in the Australian night, and a USD base account avoids converting every profit and loss.
- ASIC caps retail leverage on major indices at 1:20; Capital.com (AFSL 513393) is our second choice and offers guaranteed stops.
You do not need a US brokerage account to take a position on Wall Street. Index CFDs let Australians trade the big US benchmarks from a local, ASIC-regulated account, long or short. What changes is the clock and the currency.
How to trade US indices with Pepperstone
Pepperstone Group Limited (AFSL 414530) offers the three main US benchmarks as cash CFDs and as forwards. Cash CFDs suit short holds; forwards build the holding cost into a wider spread for longer views. All are commission-free and available on Pepperstone's app, MT5 and cTrader, and on MT4 and TradingView through Razor. You can hold the account in USD as well as AUD, which keeps your P&L in the index's own currency.

Timing it from an Australian time zone
The New York cash session runs through the Australian evening and early morning, so the open and the big US data releases arrive while most of the east coast is winding down or asleep. That has two practical effects. First, if you place a trade before bed, it will live through the most volatile hours without you watching; size it accordingly and remember Pepperstone's stops are not guaranteed. Second, the evening is when spreads are usually at their most competitive, so active traders often find the US open the best value window of their day. Pepperstone also offers more than 100 US share CFDs that trade 24 hours a day, five days a week, if you prefer single stocks around the clock.
Currency, leverage and protection
- Currency: US indices are priced in USD; in an AUD account every gain and loss is converted. Pepperstone offers USD, AUD, EUR, GBP, SGD and HKD base currencies.
- Leverage: ASIC limits retail clients to 1:20 on major indices at both Pepperstone and Capital.com.
- Protection: retail clients at Pepperstone cannot lose more than their balance, and retail money is held in segregated accounts.
- Stops: Pepperstone offers no guaranteed stop; Capital.com sells one if you want a fixed worst case.
