Which spread betting broker is best for beginners in the UK?
Verdict
- Pepperstone is our pick for beginners spread betting in the UK. You can fund from £10, there's no commission, you stake in pounds per point, and retail balances can't go below zero.
- Pepperstone does not offer guaranteed stops, so a beginner who wants a fixed worst-case exit should look at Capital.com, which offers spread betting and guaranteed stop-losses.
- At the UK retail cap of 1:20 on major indices, the margin on an index spread bet is 5% of its full value.
- Crypto spread bets aren't available to UK retail clients at any provider, because the FCA ban has covered crypto derivatives since January 2021.
Spread betting is easy to understand because everything is in pounds per point, but it moves fast for the same reason. A good first broker lets you start with very little, makes the cost obvious and limits how badly things can go wrong. Pepperstone does the first two well. For the third, Capital.com has a tool that Pepperstone doesn't.
Why Pepperstone suits a first spread bet
Spread betting at Pepperstone runs through Pepperstone Limited, which the FCA regulates under reference 684312. You need only £10 to start: card, Apple Pay and Google Pay deposits are free and land immediately, and bank transfers have no minimum. The spread is the whole trading cost, with no commission on top. Pepperstone's own web platform and app accept spread bets, so you can learn on one simple screen and move to MT4, MT5, cTrader or TradingView later without opening a new account. If a sharp move takes your balance negative, Pepperstone says it will reset it to zero.

A first spread bet in pounds, step by step
Suppose you bet £1 a point that the GER40 (Germany's DAX index) will rise. Pepperstone's published minimum spread on the GER40 is 0.9 points, so the trade starts about 90p down. If the index then rises 30 points you are up £30 before that 90p, and if it falls 30 points you are down £30. The deposit you need is the margin. At the 1:20 retail cap for major indices it is 5% of your stake multiplied by the index level. Hold the bet past 10pm UK time and an overnight fee is added for each night.
- Start at the smallest stake the platform allows. Every £1 a point means £1 gained or lost per point.
- Before you click, work out the loss in pounds if your stop is hit. If that loss would hurt, reduce the stake.
If you want a guaranteed exit: Capital.com
Pepperstone's UK terms say a stop-loss can't be guaranteed: in a fast market or over a weekend gap, your bet closes at the next available price. Capital.com (Capital Com (UK) Limited, FCA 793714) lists spread betting among its UK account types and sells guaranteed stop-loss orders, which close your bet at the exact level you chose. Its minimum deposit is £20, and retail clients have negative balance protection. It publishes live spreads rather than averages, so check its prices on the platform before you compare.

Mistakes no account setting will stop
- Treating 'tax-free' as guaranteed. Pepperstone says spread-betting profits are exempt from capital gains tax, but the treatment depends on your circumstances and the law can change.
- Holding bets for weeks without counting the overnight fees, which add up on long trades.
- Using the maximum leverage because it's available. The caps are 1:30 on major FX, 1:20 on major indices and gold, and 1:5 on shares, but you can always use less.
- Ignoring the provider's loss figure. Pepperstone Limited says 73.6% of retail accounts lose money on spread bets and CFDs with it.
