Can I short Bitcoin with a CFD?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Yes. With a Bitcoin CFD you short by selling first; at Pepperstone, our pick in Australia, you sell BTCUSD (or BTCAUD) and gain if the price falls.
  • Shorting costs the same spread as buying: Pepperstone's BTCUSD averages 15.15 on Razor, with no commission, plus overnight financing while the position stays open.
  • Retail margin is half the position value (1:2 leverage), and Pepperstone's negative balance protection stops a short squeeze from leaving you in debt.
  • A short has no ceiling on how far the price can move against you, so a stop-loss is essential, but Pepperstone's stops are not guaranteed.

Shorting is one of the main reasons people use a CFD instead of buying bitcoin. You don't borrow coins or find a lender: you open a sell position on the contract and buy it back later. Here is how that works at Pepperstone, and where the risks are.

How to short Bitcoin at Pepperstone

  1. Open and fund a Pepperstone account (ASIC, AFSL 414530); the minimum deposit is $10.
  2. Find BTCUSD, or BTCAUD for profit and loss in Australian dollars.
  3. Click Sell and choose a size; the platform shows the margin needed at 1:2.
  4. Set a stop-loss above the entry price and a take-profit below it.
  5. Close by buying the same size back.

Risks specific to shorting crypto

  • Rallies can be violent. A long position can lose at most its value; a short has no fixed limit, which is why the stop-loss matters.
  • Stops can slip. Pepperstone's Australian PDS offers no guaranteed stop-loss, so in a fast spike your stop may fill above its level.
  • Retail clients are protected from going below zero: Pepperstone says it will restore a negative account to zero. Professional clients get only a one-time protection of up to USD 100,000.
  • Financing applies to short positions held overnight too; check the short swap rate in the symbol details.

Shorting other coins

The same method works on the other coins on Pepperstone's ASIC margin table, including ETH, SOL, XRP, ADA and DOGE. Retail leverage is 1:2 on all of them. Professional clients get up to 1:10 on bitcoin and ether, but only 1:2 on other coins. If you prefer a second provider, Capital.com (ASIC, AFSL 513393) also caps retail crypto leverage at 2:1.
