What are the eligibility requirements for a professional trading account in the UK?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • At Pepperstone, our pick for UK professional clients, you qualify by meeting two of three tests: about 10 significantly sized trades per quarter over the last year, a financial-instrument portfolio above €500,000, or at least a year in the financial sector with knowledge of derivatives.
  • Passing one test is not enough, and Pepperstone's published UK criteria give no exemption based on income alone.
  • In return, leverage can rise from 1:30 to 1:500 on major FX and from 1:20 to 1:500 on gold, and UK professional clients gain access to crypto and perpetual CFDs.
  • You lose negative balance protection, so losses can exceed your deposit; ask in writing which other retail protections no longer apply.

A UK professional account is not a premium tier you buy; it is a change in how the firm classifies you, and you have to prove you meet the tests. Here are Pepperstone's tests in plain terms, the combinations that usually work, and what you trade away for higher leverage.

Pepperstone's rule: two of three tests

Pepperstone Limited, authorised by the FCA (684312), publishes three criteria for professional status and asks you to meet any two. We recommend it to traders who qualify because the terms are published in full, from the tests to the leverage table and the protection you give up. Its Pro page also lists a free VPS for eligible and Pro clients, useful if you run expert advisors around the clock, and Pro-only markets such as perpetual CFDs.

The three tests, one by one

  • Trading activity: 10 significantly sized trades per quarter, on average, over the last year. Pepperstone doesn't define 'significantly sized' on its page, so ask what counts and which statements it accepts as proof.
  • Portfolio size: a financial-instrument portfolio worth more than €500,000. The UK wording refers to financial instruments; check whether cash deposits count before you rely on them.
  • Experience: at least one year working in the financial sector in a role that required knowledge of the leveraged products you want to trade.

Which pairs of tests people usually meet

Most applicants combine an active trading record with one of the other two. A frequent trader with a large investment portfolio can use the activity and portfolio tests. Someone who worked on a dealing desk or in risk can pair experience with activity. Portfolio plus experience works without a heavy trading record. If you only meet one test, you stay a retail client, with retail leverage caps and negative balance protection in place.

The protection you give up

Retail clients at Pepperstone have negative balance protection: a balance that falls below zero is returned to zero. Pepperstone's Pro page says this won't apply to you as a professional. With 1:500 leverage, a move of 0.2% against a fully margined position wipes out the margin, and a gap can take the account below zero. Pepperstone's UK site also gives two different crypto figures for Pro clients, 1:10 in its table and up to 1:400 elsewhere on the same page, so confirm the figure for your account before you trade crypto. FSCS cover of up to £85,000 applies to eligible clients; ask whether your new classification affects eligibility.

Other UK firms with professional terms

Professional classification isn't unique to Pepperstone. StoneX Trading (FCA 446717) says negative balance protection does not apply to its professional clients. Equiti's UK company (FCA 528328) serves professional and eligible counterparty clients only, and Exness (UK) Ltd (FCA 730729) says it does not serve retail clients at all. We haven't verified the criteria at these firms or at Capital.com, so ask each for its written tests.

Can I qualify as a professional client on income alone?

Not under Pepperstone's published UK criteria. They cover trading activity, portfolio size and sector experience, and you need two of the three.

Does a €500,000 portfolio have to be held at Pepperstone?

The UK page refers to a financial-instrument portfolio above €500,000 and doesn't say where it must be held. Ask which statements Pepperstone accepts.

Can UK professional clients trade crypto CFDs at Pepperstone?

Yes. Crypto appears only on the Pro page and the Pro-only margin table; UK retail clients can't trade crypto derivatives.

CFDs and spread bets are complex, leveraged instruments with a high risk of losing money rapidly; professional clients can lose more than they deposit. 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with Pepperstone Limited.
