Which broker offers the lowest margin requirements in the UK?
Verdict
- For retail clients, no FCA-regulated broker in our data offers lower margin than the rest: Pepperstone, our top pick, and Capital.com both publish 1:30 on major FX (about 3.33%), 1:20 on major indices and gold (5%) and 1:5 on shares (20%), and CMC Markets quotes from 3.34% on forex.
- Only Professional clients get lower margin: Pepperstone's UK Pro table goes to 1:500 (0.2%) on FX, gold and major indices, and 1:20 (5%) on stocks and ETFs.
- To qualify you need two of three tests (trading activity, a portfolio above €500,000 or relevant work experience), and you lose negative balance protection.
- Lower margin is not lower risk: at 1:30, a 1% move against a fully leveraged position costs 30% of the margin.
Margin requirements for UK retail clients barely differ between FCA-regulated brokers, because the retail limits are capped. The real differences lie in how the limits are published, what Professional status unlocks and what lower margin does to your risk. Here are the numbers in pounds.
Retail margin is the same, so here is why we pick Pepperstone
Pepperstone Limited publishes retail leverage of 1:30 on major FX, 1:20 on major indices and gold, 1:10 on other commodities and 1:5 on shares. Capital.com's UK company publishes the same ratios, and CMC Markets expresses its limits as margin rates from 3.34% on forex, 5% on indices and commodities and 20% on shares and ETFs. With margin effectively fixed for retail traders, we choose on cost and protection: Pepperstone's Razor averages 0.1 pips on EUR/USD, its minimum deposit is £10, and eligible clients are covered by the FSCS up to £85,000.

Margin in pounds at the retail limits
What a £10,000 position ties up at each of Pepperstone's UK retail limits:
| Market | Leverage | Margin rate | Margin on £10,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Major FX | 1:30 | 3.33% | £333 |
| Major indices | 1:20 | 5% | £500 |
| Gold | 1:20 | 5% | £500 |
| Other commodities | 1:10 | 10% | £1,000 |
| Shares | 1:5 | 20% | £2,000 |
How UK brokers publish the same limits
Capital.com, our second choice, matches Pepperstone line for line; it adds guaranteed stops but does not lower margin. CMC's 'from 5%' covers indices and commodities together, so check the rate on the specific commodity.
| Broker | Major FX | Major indices | Gold | Shares |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pepperstone (FCA 684312) | 1:30 | 1:20 | 1:20 | 1:5 |
| Capital.com (FCA 793714) | 30:1 | 20:1 | 20:1 | 5:1 |
| CMC Markets (FCA 173730) | From 3.34% | From 5% | From 5% (commodities) | From 20% |
| OANDA (FCA 542574) | 30:1 (3.33%) | Not in our data | 20:1 (5%) | Not in our data |
Lower margin as a Professional client
Pepperstone's UK Pro table allows up to 1:500 on FX, gold and major indices, 1:200 on energies, 1:50 on metals and soft commodities, and 1:20 on stocks and ETFs. On a £10,000 FX position that is £20 of margin instead of £333. To qualify, meet two of three: 10 significantly sized trades a quarter over the last year, a financial-instrument portfolio above €500,000, or at least a year in a finance role that requires knowledge of derivatives. The price of qualifying: negative balance protection no longer applies to you.
What lower margin does to your risk
- At 1:30, a 1% move against a fully margined FX position equals 30% of the margin.
- At 1:500, a 0.2% move wipes out the margin entirely.
- Margin is the minimum you must post, not a target: you can always trade smaller.
- Retail clients at Pepperstone cannot lose more than their balance; Professional clients can.

Leverage and margin as each broker publishes them.
Why can't UK brokers offer retail clients more than 1:30?
UK retail leverage on major FX is capped at 1:30, which is why every FCA-regulated broker in our data publishes the same figure. Higher leverage is available only to clients reclassified as Professional.
Is margin the same for spread bets and CFDs at Pepperstone?
Pepperstone publishes one retail leverage table for UK clients, without separate spread bet figures. Check the margin the platform shows for the specific market before you trade.
Do offshore brokers offer UK residents lower margin?
Some brokers' offshore companies publish higher leverage, but Pepperstone's Bahamas company says its products are not intended for UK residents. Trading with an offshore firm also means giving up FCA protections such as FSCS cover.
Spread bets and CFDs are complex, leveraged instruments with a high risk of fast losses, and lower margin means losses arrive faster. Decide whether you can afford that risk before trading. We publish broker-stated terms, not advice; verify limits on the broker's own site.
