How many share CFDs does an Australian broker offer?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone, our top pick in Australia, counts 1,162 share CFDs on its ASIC-regulated Standard and Razor accounts (account table, data sourced 12 March 2025).
  • By exchange, Pepperstone lists 600+ US shares, 200 ASX shares, 46 HKEX shares, 100+ LSE shares and a German/European range; its markets page rounds this to 1100+ underlying shares.
  • Commission per side on Pepperstone share CFDs: 0.07% on ASX stocks, 0.10% on UK and German stocks, 0.20% on Hong Kong stocks and US$0.02 per share on US stocks, with no minimum.
  • Retail leverage on share CFDs under ASIC rules is capped at 1:5, so every A$1,000 of exposure needs A$200 of margin.

Counts differ a lot between Australian brokers, and a headline number tells you little until you know which exchanges sit behind it. Pepperstone publishes a precise figure for its Australian accounts, 1,162 share CFDs, with a split by exchange that lets you check whether your stocks are covered.

Pepperstone's count: 1,162 share CFDs on one ASIC account

Pepperstone Group Limited (AFSL 414530) shows 1,162 share CFDs in the instrument table on its Australian accounts page, using data sourced on 12 March 2025. The same Standard or Razor account also carries 95 ETF CFDs, 93 margin FX pairs, 26 index CFDs, 40 commodity CFDs and 31 crypto CFDs, so the share range sits next to everything else rather than in a separate stock account. Pepperstone's own pages round the share figure differently ("1100+ underlying shares" on the markets page), which is why we quote the dated table figure. You can open the account from a $10 deposit.

Where the shares come from

The count matters less than whether your exchanges are in it. Pepperstone's share pages break the range down like this, alongside the commission charged on each side of a trade in an Australian account:

Pepperstone share CFDs by exchange and commission per side (Australian account)
ExchangeShares listed by PepperstoneCommission per side
US (NYSE, NASDAQ)600+US$0.02 per share
Australia (ASX)2000.07%
Hong Kong (HKEX)460.20%
UK (LSE)100+0.10%
Germany / EuropeA German and European range (no count published)0.10% on German shares

What a trade costs on the biggest groups

Commission is the main fee on share CFDs at Pepperstone, and none of the rates above has a minimum charge. Two worked examples at the published rates:

  • A$10,000 of an ASX stock: 0.07% is A$7 to open and A$7 to close, A$14 in total. At the 1:5 retail cap the position needs A$2,000 of margin.
  • 100 shares of a US stock: US$0.02 per share is US$2 each way, US$4 round trip, whatever the share price.
  • Positions held overnight also pay financing, which is not included in these figures.

Extras beyond ordinary market hours

Pepperstone offers 100+ US share CFDs around the clock on weekdays (24/5) through symbols with a -24 suffix, such as AAPL.US-24. That lets you react to US earnings during the Australian day instead of waiting for the New York open. ETF CFDs are a separate list of 95 in the account table (the ETF page says 80+), with US ETF CFDs charged at the same US$0.02 per share.

How to compare another broker's count

Our verified data does not include share CFD totals for other Australian brokers, so we will not quote one. If you are weighing Capital.com (AFSL 513393) or anyone else, ask for the full symbol list and check three things:

  • Are your specific ASX names on it, not just the big US stocks?
  • Is the count share CFDs only, or does it include ETFs, indices and other markets?
  • Which commission applies per exchange, and is there a minimum per trade?

Sources

Figures come from Pepperstone's own pages for its Australian entity.

Does Pepperstone offer ASX share CFDs?

Yes. Pepperstone lists 200 ASX shares as CFDs, charged 0.07% commission per side with no minimum.

Can I own the shares through a CFD?

No. A share CFD tracks the price; you do not hold the stock, voting rights or a CHESS-sponsored holding.

What leverage applies to share CFDs in Australia?

Up to 1:5 for retail clients at Pepperstone; professional clients can get up to 1:20.

CFDs are complex, leveraged products and carry a high risk of losing money quickly. Share CFDs do not give you ownership of the underlying shares. This page is general information, not personal investment advice; check the broker's PDS and TMD before trading.
