What protections do DFSA-regulated brokers give retail clients?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone is our top pick for UAE retail clients on protection: its UAE risk disclosure gives retail clients negative balance protection and its protection page says client money is segregated, although its UAE accounts are issued by its Bahamas company rather than its DFSA firm.
  • A DFSA licence tells you the firm is authorised in Dubai's DIFC for specific activities; the protections you actually get depend on the company that holds your account and its client agreement.
  • Some DFSA firms may not hold client money at all: Plus500AE Ltd is a Category 4 firm that introduces clients to Plus500's Cyprus company.
  • This page does not summarise the DFSA rulebook; for the rules themselves, read the DFSA's own material and the firm's register entry.

Retail clients often assume a DFSA logo means DIFC-level protection on their own account. Sometimes it does; often the DFSA firm in a group introduces you to another company. Here is what to look for, with the protections three brokers actually publish.

Pepperstone: the protections written into its UAE documents

Pepperstone's DIFC company, Pepperstone Financial Services (DIFC) Ltd, is DFSA-regulated under F004356. The UAE documents a retail client signs are with Pepperstone Markets Limited (Bahamas, SCB SIA-F217) and Pepperstone Financial Services LLC, and they spell out three things: retail clients are entitled to negative balance protection; client money is held separately, according to the UAE protection page; and the service is execution-only, with no advice. No investor compensation scheme is named. We recommend Pepperstone on that basis, with those terms in view.

What DFSA-listed brokers publish for retail clients

  • Pepperstone (F004356): retail negative balance protection and segregated client money, per its UAE documents; accounts issued by the Bahamas company.
  • IG Limited (F001780): a limited-risk account on which you cannot lose more than your deposit; on the standard IG trading account in Dubai, IG says you can.
  • Plus500AE Ltd (F005651): Category 4 with a retail endorsement and may not hold client money; it introduces clients to Plus500CY, and Plus500 says clients cannot lose more than the funds in their account.
  • XM's Trading Point MENA Limited (F003484) and Tickmill's representative office (F007663): our data holds no UAE-specific retail protection terms.

Questions that tell you more than the logo

At Pepperstone, becoming a Pro client changes the answer to the third question: Pros may get a one-time protection of up to $100,000 instead of full retail cover.

  1. Which company is my counterparty, and which regulator supervises that company?
  2. Is my money held in segregated accounts, and by which entity?
  3. Does negative balance protection apply to me, and what happens if I opt up to Professional status?
  4. Is any compensation scheme available, and under which law?

Protections as published by each broker; DFSA rules themselves are not summarised here.

Is my Pepperstone UAE account held by the DFSA-regulated company?

No. Pepperstone names Pepperstone Markets Limited, regulated in the Bahamas, as the product issuer for its UAE business. Its DFSA-regulated DIFC company is listed alongside it.

Do DFSA-regulated brokers have to offer negative balance protection?

We do not summarise DFSA rules here. Check the firm's client agreement: Pepperstone's UAE retail disclosure includes it, and IG offers it on a limited-risk account.

Where can I check a firm's DFSA status?

On the DFSA public register, by firm name or reference number, for example F004356 for Pepperstone's DIFC company.
