Do I need a crypto wallet to trade crypto CFDs?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • No. A crypto CFD is a cash-settled contract, so at Pepperstone, our pick in Australia, you can trade bitcoin, ether and 40+ other coins without owning a wallet.
  • You fund the account with ordinary money: PayID, cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Neteller, Skrill or BPAY from $10, or a domestic bank transfer with no minimum.
  • A wallet becomes useful only if you choose to deposit or withdraw in crypto; Pepperstone accepts crypto deposits from $18 and processes crypto withdrawals within 1 business day.
  • The flip side: you can't move coins out of a CFD position, stake them, or use them on a blockchain.

You don't need one. Because a CFD only tracks the coin's price, nothing is ever sent to a blockchain address. The only time a wallet enters the picture at Pepperstone is if you decide to fund or withdraw in crypto rather than dollars.

Trading crypto at Pepperstone without a wallet

Pepperstone Group Limited (ASIC, AFSL 414530) holds your account balance in money, in a base currency of AUD, USD, EUR, GBP, SGD or HKD. Buying BTCUSD or ETHAUD opens a contract; your profit or loss is credited in that currency when you close. There are no private keys, seed phrases or exchange transfers to manage, and crypto CFDs carry no commission. Retail client money is held in segregated accounts at top-tier banks.

When a wallet might still be worth having

  • Fast funding at weekends: crypto deposits are instant, though PayID and cards are too.
  • Withdrawals back to crypto: Pepperstone lists crypto withdrawals at up to 1 business day. Funds generally go back to the source you deposited from.
  • If you also want to own coins, which a CFD account cannot give you.

What you give up without the coins

No wallet also means no ownership. You cannot transfer the coin, earn staking rewards, or hold it through a provider failure the way self-custodied coins can be held. Your exposure is to Pepperstone as counterparty: client money is segregated, but no compensation scheme is named for Australian clients, and Pepperstone says there is no guarantee that all funds would be returned in a liquidation. In exchange you get shorting, 1:2 leverage and negative balance protection as a retail client.
