Does your trading platform affect your spread?

Updated: 2026-09-06How we test

Verdict

  • The spread itself comes from the broker's account type and liquidity sourcing, not the charting platform — MT4, MT5 and cTrader show you the same live price feed from the same account.
  • The one place platform choice does change cost directly is per-platform commission: Pepperstone charges a separate, higher $7-per-lot round-turn commission specifically for trading via TradingView on its Razor account, versus its standard MT4/MT5/cTrader commission.
  • Platform coverage decides whether a low-spread account is usable for you at all, even though it doesn't move the spread number itself — an account with the tightest published spread is worthless if it isn't offered on the platform you actually trade on.
  • Pepperstone publishes the widest platform range among the brokers on this site: its own platform and app, MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView.
  • Capital.com's own web and mobile platform is its primary experience, with MT4, MT5 and TradingView offered alongside it.

Searching for "the platform with the lowest spread" is a reasonable instinct, but it's aimed at the wrong layer — the platform displays a price, it doesn't set one. Here's what actually changes, and what doesn't.

What the platform does and doesn't control

Your spread comes from your account type and the liquidity your broker sources for it — a Pepperstone Razor account quotes the same live spread whether you view it through MT4, MT5, cTrader or Pepperstone's own app, because they're all reading the same account's price feed. Switching platforms on the same account does not change your spread.

Where platform choice does cost you: per-platform commission

The one documented exception is commission, not spread. Pepperstone's own pricing page lists a separate TradingView commission of $7 round-turn per lot on its Razor account — higher than its standard MT4/MT5/cTrader commission rate. The spread is identical across platforms; the fee for accessing it through TradingView specifically is not.

Platform coverage, broker by broker

The practical question isn't which platform has the lowest spread — none of them do, independently. It's whether the account with the spread you want is actually available on the platform you already trade on. If you run EAs on MT4 specifically, for instance, ActivTrades' current platform menu doesn't list MT4 even though it's still referenced in some site copy — worth confirming directly before you commit.

Does MT4 have lower spreads than MT5 or cTrader?

No. The spread is set by your account and the broker's liquidity sourcing, not the platform. The same account shows the same live spread on MT4, MT5, cTrader or a broker's own platform.

Does trading on TradingView cost more?

It can. Pepperstone's Razor account charges a separate $7 round-turn commission per lot for TradingView specifically, higher than its MT4/MT5/cTrader commission — the spread is the same, the platform fee isn't.

Which broker has the widest platform choice?

Of the brokers we've verified, Pepperstone publishes the widest range: its own platform and app plus MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView.
