Which forex brokers are best for small account traders?
Verdict
- Pepperstone is our pick for small-account forex traders in Australia: a $10 minimum deposit, free deposits and withdrawals, an AUD base currency and no inactivity fee.
- Capital.com (AFSL 513393) is our second choice at a $20 minimum, and it offers guaranteed stop-losses, which Pepperstone does not.
- With a small balance the real risk is leverage, not fees: ASIC's 1:30 cap on major pairs still lets a $500 account control $15,000.
- On a 0.1-lot EUR/USD trade, Pepperstone's published averages cost about $1.10 on Standard and 80 cents on Razor (MT5).
A small account has different problems from a large one. Minimums, deposit fees and dormant-account charges eat a bigger slice, and one oversized trade can end the account. Here is how we would set one up in Australia.
Why Pepperstone suits a small balance
Pepperstone's Australian site advertises a minimum deposit of just $10. PayID, cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Neteller and Skrill deposits start at $10, arrive instantly and cost nothing; BPAY takes up to a business day. Withdrawals are free too, back to the source, within one business day for PayPal, Neteller, Skrill and crypto, and up to two for cards and PayID. You can hold the account in AUD, so you are not paying a conversion on every top-up. There is no inactivity or account-keeping fee, although Pepperstone says accounts holding under 10 currency units and left unused for three months or more may be archived.

| Capital.com | AFSL 513393 | $20 | Guaranteed stops available |
| IC Markets | AFSL 335692 | $0 | Raw Spread account |

Leverage is the bigger danger with a small account
ASIC limits retail clients to 1:30 on major currency pairs, which sounds restrictive until you do the arithmetic: a $10,000 position needs only about $333 of margin. On a $500 account, a 50-pip stop on that position costs $50, ten times a 1% risk budget. Pepperstone's negative balance protection means you cannot lose more than your balance, but it will not save the balance itself. A practical rule is to size each trade so that the stop costs no more than 1% to 2% of the account, which for most small accounts means 0.01 to 0.05 lots on the majors; check the minimum trade size in your platform's contract specification.
Razor or Standard on a small balance?
At 0.1 lots of EUR/USD, Standard costs about $1.10 at its 1.1-pip average and Razor about 80 cents on MT5 (10 cents of spread plus 70 cents of commission). Either is fine; choose Razor if you want TradingView or MT4, which Pepperstone's Australian Standard account does not offer.

Can I really start with $10 at Pepperstone?
Yes, $10 is the published minimum for PayID, card and e-wallet deposits. It is enough to test a deposit and a withdrawal, but very little to trade with once margin is needed.
Will a small balance be charged an inactivity fee?
No inactivity fee is charged. Pepperstone says accounts under 10 currency units that sit unused for three months or more may be archived.
Is Capital.com better for a small account?
It is the better choice if you want a guaranteed stop to cap each trade's loss exactly. On published minimums, Pepperstone starts lower at $10 against $20.
Leveraged products can lose a small account's entire balance in a single trade. Only trade money you can afford to lose and read the PDS and TMD before applying. This is general information, not personal advice.
