Who are the best CFD brokers for beginners in the UK?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone is our first pick for UK CFD beginners. You can start with £10, the Standard account has no commission, and retail balances can't go below zero.
  • Capital.com is the runner-up, and the better choice if you want guaranteed stop-losses. Pepperstone doesn't offer them. Capital.com's minimum deposit is £20.
  • Both firms are FCA-authorised and apply the same retail leverage caps, so a beginner can't take on more leverage at one than at the other.
  • Crypto CFDs are off the table for UK beginners at any broker, because the FCA has banned them for retail clients since January 2021.

A beginner needs to start small, see one clear cost, and be protected from the worst outcomes. Pepperstone covers the first two well and part of the third. If you would sleep better with a stop that is guaranteed to fill at your price, Capital.com fills that gap.

Pepperstone for a first CFD account

Open a Standard account. You pay one cost, the spread, with no commission except on shares. Pepperstone's published EUR/USD average is 1.1 pips. You can fund with £10 by debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, free and instantly, and run the account in GBP so you avoid currency conversion. Retail clients get negative balance protection: if a fast market pushes your account below zero, Pepperstone says it will return it to zero. You can trade on Pepperstone's own web platform and app, which is enough to learn on, and add MT5 or cTrader later.

What your first trade actually puts at risk

Leverage means a small deposit controls a much bigger position. The FCA caps it for retail clients. At Pepperstone the caps are 1:30 on major FX, 1:20 on major indices and gold, 1:10 on other commodities and 1:5 on shares. Here is what that means for a £1,000 position:

  • The loss is the same £20 in each case, but on the index trade it is 40% of the £50 margin you put up. That is how small moves wipe out beginner accounts.
  • You can always use less leverage than the cap by trading a smaller size.

Capital.com: our runner-up for beginners who want guaranteed stops

A normal stop-loss is an instruction to close at the next available price. If the market gaps, it can fill well past your level, and Pepperstone's UK terms say plainly that stops can't be guaranteed. Capital.com (Capital Com (UK) Limited, FCA 793714) sells guaranteed stop-loss orders. It also gives retail clients negative balance protection, accepts deposits from £20, and runs its own web platform and app plus MT4, MT5 and TradingView. The trade-off is pricing: it publishes live spreads rather than an average, so it's harder to compare costs before you sign up.

Five checks before you fund any CFD account

  1. Search the FCA register for the exact company on your agreement: Pepperstone Limited is 684312 and Capital Com (UK) Limited is 793714.
  2. Choose a GBP base currency if you are paid in pounds.
  3. Deposit the minimum first, then test a withdrawal. Pepperstone pays card withdrawals back to the same card, usually the same day or within 1 working day.
  4. Read the provider's loss figure: Pepperstone Limited states that 73.6% of retail accounts lose money with it.
  5. Set a stop on every trade and size positions so one loss can't take more than a small part of your balance.

Should a beginner choose Pepperstone's Standard or Razor account?

Standard, at first. It has one all-in cost and works on Pepperstone's own app. Razor is cheaper per lot on average, but you have to add commission to the spread to see the real price.

Can a UK beginner trade crypto CFDs?

No. The FCA has banned the sale of crypto derivatives to retail clients since 6 January 2021. Pepperstone's UK site offers crypto only to Professional clients.

Does Pepperstone offer copy trading to UK clients?

Its CopyTrading service is listed on Pepperstone's international site, not on the UK site, so don't count on it as a UK beginner.

CFDs are complex and leveraged, and beginners can lose money fast. 73.6% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with Pepperstone Limited.
