Which broker is best for natural gas trading?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone is our overall pick for UK commodity traders, but we can't confirm natural gas from its published material: its 40-commodity range includes energies, yet natural gas isn't named on the pages we verified, so search for the symbol before opening an account for it.
  • Natural gas is known for sharp price swings, which makes guaranteed stops valuable; Capital.com, IG and CMC Markets sell them, and Pepperstone doesn't.
  • UK retail leverage on energies is capped at 1:10 at Pepperstone and Capital.com, so £5,000 of exposure needs £500 of margin.
  • No firm in our fact pack publishes a natural gas spread, so compare live quotes.

Natural gas is a narrower market than oil or gold, and not every CFD provider prices it. Here's what we can and can't confirm about Pepperstone, why gap protection weighs more on gas than on most markets, and the checks to run on any firm before you trade it.

Pepperstone for energy traders, with one caveat

Pepperstone Limited (FCA 684312) offers 40 commodities, and energies are a separate class in its UK leverage tables (up to 1:200 for Professional clients). Its product tables name the two crude benchmarks, WTOIL and BRENTOIL. Natural gas isn't named in the Pepperstone material we verified, so before you open an account to trade it, check the commodity list on Pepperstone's markets page or search the symbol in a platform. If it's listed, you get Pepperstone's strengths: five platforms, commission-free spread bets, no commission on Standard CFDs outside shares, negative balance protection for retail clients and a £10 card minimum.

Why gas traders should think about guaranteed stops

Gas prices react to weather forecasts, storage figures and supply problems, and can open well away from the previous close. Pepperstone's UK terms say stop-loss orders can't be guaranteed at a set level. Three FCA-regulated firms in our fact pack sell guaranteed stops:

  • Capital.com (FCA 793714): guaranteed stop-loss orders, spread betting and a £20 minimum deposit.
  • IG (FCA 195355 for CFDs, 114059 for spread betting): free to place, with a premium charged only if the stop is triggered.
  • CMC Markets (FCA 173730): a fee to attach the stop, refunded in full if it isn't triggered.

Margin on a gas position

At 1:10, a 10% move against you uses the whole margin. Pepperstone's retail negative balance protection stops your account going below zero, but a fast move can still close the position and take the full margin.

Checks before you trade gas anywhere

  • Is natural gas listed, and as a cash CFD, a futures-based contract or both?
  • What's the live spread at the hours you trade, compared with another firm at the same moment?
  • What does an overnight hold cost? At Pepperstone the fee applies after 10 pm UK time.
  • Is a guaranteed stop available, and what does it cost if triggered?
  • Can you spread bet it in pounds per point? Pepperstone says UK spread betting profits are exempt from CGT, depending on your circumstances.
