What is the best app for trading oil?

Updated: 2026-10-21How we test

Verdict

  • Pepperstone is our pick for trading oil from an app in the UAE: energy CFDs on its own app, MT5, cTrader, MT4 and TradingView, with retail leverage capped at 1:20 on energies.
  • Pepperstone's UAE retail margin table also lists WTI and Brent perpetual CFDs, which have no expiry and replace swap with a funding rate; confirm they are open to your account before trading them.
  • None of Pepperstone, Capital.com or XS publishes an oil spread in our data, so compare the live WTI and Brent spreads in each app yourself.
  • If you hold oil for days and need it swap-free, look at XS, whose published swap-free exceptions name only crypto and shares; Pepperstone offers no swap-free account to UAE residents.

Oil is one of the most volatile markets most retail traders touch, so the app you choose should limit how much leverage you can pile on and let you see what holding a position overnight will cost. Pepperstone does both clearly for UAE residents, and it is our pick, with one gap: its oil spreads are not published in our data.

Pepperstone for oil: a conservative leverage cap and two ways to trade

On its UAE site, Pepperstone sets retail leverage on energies at 1:20, and the Pro tier keeps it at 1:20, even though Pro raises gold and forex to 1:500. That means a $10,000 oil position ties up about $500 of margin. Besides standard energy CFDs, Pepperstone runs perpetual CFDs on WTI and Brent (WTOIL-PERP and BRENTOIL-PERP appear on its UAE retail margin table); Pepperstone describes perpetuals as having no expiry, trading 24/7 and carrying a funding rate set weekly in advance and applied daily at 5 pm New York time. UAE residents can fund in AED from $10. CFDs are issued by Pepperstone Markets Limited (SCB, Bahamas), and the group's DIFC company is regulated by the DFSA.

Leverage is the real oil risk

Capital.com's Dubai company lists retail leverage of 500:1 on crude. At that level a 0.2% move against a fully margined position uses up the margin. Pepperstone's 1:20 cap means a 5% adverse move before the margin is gone. Lower leverage does not make oil safe, but it gives a stop-loss room to work. Pepperstone publishes no guaranteed stop-loss, so in a gap your stop can fill beyond its level.

Before you trade oil in any app

  1. Pick the benchmark you want to trade, WTI or Brent, and stick to it while you learn.
  2. Check the contract size and the value of a one-cent or one-point move in the symbol information.
  3. Watch the live spread at the time you would trade, including around scheduled economic releases.
  4. Look up the overnight swap or, for a perpetual, the current week's funding rate before holding past the rollover.

Does Pepperstone Pro raise leverage on oil?

No. Pepperstone's UAE table shows energies at 1:20 for both retail and Pro clients.

Is there a swap-free way to hold oil as a UAE resident?

XS applies swap-free status automatically for UAE residents, and its published exceptions are crypto and shares. Capital.com offers swap-free accounts on request. Pepperstone does not offer one in the UAE.

What is an oil perpetual CFD?

A CFD with no expiry date. Instead of swap it carries a funding rate, which Pepperstone sets weekly and applies daily.

Oil CFDs are complex, leveraged and volatile, and prices can gap, so you can lose money very quickly. Leverage and product details are as brokers publish them and may change. This is not investment advice.
